Wissam Shawkat: Black & White

Monochrome works at reduced scale from one of the masters of modern calligraphic art. In this show there are 111 in total, all in his characteristic calligraphy styles including Al Wissam and Calligraforms. “It feels to me a universal truth that master calligraphers do not first see colour,” says Shawkat. “We see form; we do not study at length tonal contrasts, before first analysing the relationship between our letterforms, their rhythm, and the space they occupy.” To 12 December.
