Van Gogh’s love for Japanese art ran deep: he admired the way Japanese artists lived in harmony with nature and the complete focus on their work, and he aspired to do the same. Although he only discovered Japan in the latter years of his short life, the results profoundly shaped his art and significantly influenced many of the works we now regard as his greatest masterpieces – especially in his use of exuberant colour. As he wrote to his brother: “we wouldn’t be able to study Japanese art … without becoming much happier and more cheerful”.
