The Hungarian National Ballet is in Dubai for three days with a critically acclaimed Swan Lake. Tchaikovsky’s first (and by many accounts best) ballet has the iconic casting of the same female ballet dancer for both Odette – the pure, innocent white swan – and Odile – the seductive, manipulative black swan. This version follows the classic Petipa/Ivanov choreography, adapted by Rudi van Dantzig and Toer van Schayk in 1988; it has been in this company’s repertoire since 2015.
There’s a full company and crops de danse. Odette/Odile is shared between Tatyjana Melnyik and Maria Yakovleva in successive performances, with Ganna Muromtseva as cover; the dashing young prince Siegfried is danced by Gergő Ármin Balázsi and Louis Scrivener, with Iurii Kekalo covering. Gábor Hontvári conducts the full Hungarian State Opera Orchestra.
There are further performances on 9 and 10 September.
