Betsayda Machado and La Parranda el Clavo

Building on their participation in The Arts Center’s virtual online season in 2021 with the world premiere of their documentary Las Cantoras, Betsayada Machado leads her group in close harmonies, polyphonic melodies and call and response – a spirit-shaking celebration of Venezuela built on propulsive traditional drumming. The UAE’s Liwa Maritime Ensemble (below) opens the evening with a very different performance of traditional Emirati music laden with East African influences.
