Surreal: Magical realism in animation & contemporary art of the Soviet & post Soviet space

8 June 2024
Free

An exhibition of Soviet animation film by Priit Parn, Fyodor Khitruk, Andrey Khrzhanovsky, Yuri Norshtein, and Robert Sahakyants; and post-soviet video art, paintings, installations, objects and works on paper by Blue Noses, Diana Kapizova, Nikolay Koshelev, Alina Kugush, Katerina Lukina, Kirill Makarov, Kirill Mikhailin, Slava Nesterov, and Diana Shliman.

Surreal considers a space in Soviet art where the grip of the state was weakened. Animators like Fyodor Khitruk, Andrei Khrzhanovsky, and Yuri Norstein made works ostensibly for children but which explored surreal realms of fiction and magical realism, offering an escape from the isolated Soviet reality and a means of connecting with the wider world. By the late 80s, these unconventional animations were influencing a generation caught between a bleak Soviet socialist reality and impending capitalism.

To 14 July.
