Philip Mueller: The Black Flags of Medea

Another excursion through the worlds of one of Carbon 12’s stars. It’s a gathering of old and new people from paintings past, featuring the Black Flamingo Sad Boys and the Naxos Racing Team; the work marks a fundamental stage in the journey that Mueller’s characters are undergoing. Unanswered questions loom large, demanding resolution; the exhibition revolves around this search for meaning, reflecting a period of introspection.
Mueller’s fascination with German Romanticism permeates his new compositions. Within the tableau of these scenic works sits Medea – a woman scorned, a symbol of violent action turned into freedom. But Medea’s presence, despite her tragic history, is symbolic of renewal and the desire to rise again. Within the same frame, a cowboy boot is escorted to its final resting place; its ‘death is a final farewell to the persona it once stood for ..
