Gjoen invites the viewer to explore the delicate balance between history and modernity, as envisioned through a distinctive style that fuses street art influences with pop culture and fine art – symbols and themes from the Renaissance and Baroque are reimagined to challenge traditional views of beauty. That aesthetic isn’t too surprising; after studying fine art and fashion design, Gjoen worked with Vivienne Westwood en route to a full-time commitment to art rather than fashion. The gallery is suitably bullish: “The Future of The Past … transports viewers across timelines, challenging the thought of what was, what is and perhaps what could be”.
To 16 October.
