The Syrian artist’s first solo exhibition with this gallery (and his first show in eight years) is a series of new works on paper created in 2023. Considered one of the pioneers of modernism and expressionism in Syria, Moualla was the first of his peers to introduce interactive performance to his work; though he no longer incorporates performance, the act and process of creating his works is a performance in itself – he’s known for his dramatic, intensely theatrical large-scale canvasses.
“Blurring the boundaries between fact and fiction, consciousness and subconsciousness, Moualla reflects on the ambiguities that are constantly in our minds and part of our daily lives” says the gallery. ” Calling for a reconsideration of socially rooted axioms, specifically in Arab society and through the process of a war, the artist intentionally poses questions ideas of power, free-will, and choices.”
