CLOSING TODAY Karima Al Shomely: Between a Fold and a Memory

Karima Al Shomely’s work draws from the clothing, textiles and adornments of Emirati women. The burqa is a recurring subject, appearing in works that look at how it was made, worn and passed down through generations; Al Shomely also works with traditional Emirati fabrics, including Bou Tira, Bu Glaym and Bu Teelah, enlarging their patterns and remaking them in metal. Through photography, sculpture, textile and video, she brings these materials and their histories into the present.
