CLOSING TODAY Artist’s Room: Shezad Dawood

Dawood’s New Dream Machine Project centres on a 3m-high rotating and flickering light sculpture, an homage to artist and writer Brion Gysin’s Dreamachine; driving the mechanism is a perforated cylinder emitting pulses of light at the frequency of the brain’s alpha waves, said to induce altered states of consciousness. Originally commissioned for the Abraaj Group Art Prize in 2011 and first presented at Art Dubai that same year, the work is part of the Art Jameel Collection and has rarely been exhibited since.

Here the sculpture is presented alongside two smaller Recyclages prototypes and archival materials tracing the project’s history.
