Bygones

16 January 2025
Free

What does it mean to come from a home that does not exist today? The artworks in this exhibition examine the idea of true foreigners – whose left-behind homes exist not only in a different place, but also in a different time. Bygones was born out of a longing for community, and reflects on the trials and tribulations of holding onto a homeland when one relates wholeheartedly to what it once was, but what it is no longer.

This is a deeply personal exhibition for curator Anita Shishani, who has included her own paintings, weaving her voice into the dialogue visually. Artists Anastasia A, Alla Abdunabi, Aya Afaneh, Houssam Ballan, Bady Dalloul, Hala El Abora, Zaina El-Said, Syed Hussain, Diana Ishaqat, Pouran Jinchi, Anuar Khalifi, Yoonsik Chico Park, and Ansadat Zumsoy have contributed their work.

To 11 February.

There’s an accompanying public programme in the Art Gallery Reading Room:

17 January 6.30pm Writing Workshop: How to Return as if You Never Left – Yesmine Abida
21 January 630pm Curator Talk – Anita Shishani
24 January 6.30pm Artist Talk – Aysha Hamkari, The History of Circassian Dance
