Exit 11 Performing Arts Company has selected nine artists, including four in the UAE, for the second edition of its cross-border, cross-disciplinary virtual residency programme for emerging artists.
The three-month residency, the Virtual Collaborative Program for Emerging Artists (VICE), is intended to elevate diverse voices and emerging artists through collaborative, interdisciplinary art across national borders. The 2022 cohort includes poets, writers, dancers, theatre-makers, filmmakers, photographers, and visual artists representing seven nationalities and based across five countries (Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Netherlands, and the Philippines as well as the UAE).
The group will meet twice a week from October to December 2022 for workshops intended to introduce them to new disciplines while building bonds within the cohort. The artists will then be grouped in pairs or trios to create new work that explores their artistic practice, fostering intercultural dialogue and artistic development.
The workshops will be delivered by UAE-based creatives from a variety of fields, including Emirati sound artist Safeya Alblooshi, mixed media artist Ciel Arbour-Boehme, singer-songwriter Mary Collins, poet and performer Tzy Jiun Tan, theatre-maker Ethan David Lee, and Postscript Magazine co-founder Zoe Jane.
The programme will culminate in a public showcase of the work.
“Exit 11 is hugely invested in the development of the arts and wider creative economy in the UAE”, said Ethan David Lee, one of the three Co-creative Directors of Exit 11. “We believe that a grassroots programme that supports emerging artists is the most essential work we can be doing to ensure a flourishing arts ecosystem.”
Kevin Ke, another Co-creative Director, summarised the goal: “It is our hope that the artists selected in this programme will build upon their artistic practice by exploring new mediums and ways of realizing their creative impulses and form long-lasting, collaborative relationships within the cohort.”
