Artist’s Rooms: Sancintya Mohini Simpson

Sancintya Mohini Simpson is a descended from indentured labourers sent from India to work on colonial sugar plantations in South Africa; her work navigates the complexities of migration, memory and trauma, moving between painting, video, poetry and performance to address gaps and silences within the colonial archive and reflect on her lineage. Her artist’s room showcases three significant works by her – Vessel (iteration #5), Jahajin and Ṭāpū – that reflect on the exploitation of indentured labour by colonial sugar industries.
Jameel’s Artists Rooms series gives a single gallery over to a solo exhibition by influential, innovative artists, with a particular focus on practitioner from the Middle East, Asia and Africa. These capsule shows are collaborative and curated in dialogue with the artist.
To 24 November.
