Touki Bouki: dir Djibril Diop Mambéty (1973)

Mory, a sometime cattle herder, and his grilfriend Anta, a university student, yearn to leave their boring, circumscribed world and find prosperity and stability in France. The late Djibril Diop Mambéty was a true Senegalese auteur, an actor, orator, composer and poet as well as a film director with an original technique and a characteristic non-linear, unconventional narrative style. Touki Bouki shows in a programme of Friday-evening films selected by Ose Ekore to support Efie Gallery’s current group exhibition time heals, just not quick enough (runs to 30 July).
