Ramadaniyyat: The Boom Diwaniya

An evening of music between the seafaring Arabian Gulf and Swahili coastal communities. Informal evening gatherings on three consecutive nights (15-17 March) will introduce the Kuwaiti diwaniya, where members from traditional groups including the Hamad Bin Hussein Ensemble and the Mayouf Mejally Ensemble will perform and share the traditional sea arts (bahri music) with Boom.Diwan, a collaborative global jazz ensemble that revives the cosmopolitan tradition of the Kuwaiti pearl diving music. Guest artists will include celebrated violinist Layth Sidiq, current artistic director of the New York Arabic Orchestra, and the Kenyan multi-instrumentalist Mbarak Ali Haji.
