Mary Poppins: dir Robert Stevenson (1964)

A newly restored print of the multiple Academy Award winner, starring Julie Andrews as the magical nanny and Dick Van Dyke as a most unlikely chimney sweep. Fantastical adventures follow as the spirited nanny turns every chore into a game and every day into a holiday as the children try to pass on some of their nanny’s sunny attitude to their preoccupied parents (David Tomlinson, Glynis Johns). Widely considered one of Walt Disney’s crowning achievements, Mary Poppins was the only Disney film to receive a Best Picture nomination in his lifetime. Time magazine called it “One of the best films ever produced … a fantasy of the most delicate touch and charming disposition. The sets are luxuriant, the songs lilting, the scenario witty but impeccably sentimental, and the supporting cast only a pinfeather short of perfection”. The lilting songs include favourites like ‘A Spoonful of Sugar’, ‘Chim Chim Cher-ee’ and ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’.
