Mami Wata: dir CJ Obasi (2023)

Much-awarded black-and-white fantasy thriller, based on Nigerian folklore. Said the LA Times: “That balance between light and dark is how Obasi most potently underscores all his themes: faith and proof, tradition versus modernity, the otherworldly alongside the human, and of course, Mami Wata’s power to give and take”.
Screens with Baptized by Fire (dir Kach Offor, 2024: 15 mins) – a psychedelic exploration of anxiety, social alienation and the inefficacy of escapism: a regular visit to a dealer in the slums of Lagos takes an unexpected turn and forces this anxious stoner on a different kind of trip.
This is the opener for a programme of Friday-evening films selected by Ose Ekore to support the gallery’s current group exhibition time heals, just not quick enough (runs to 30 July).
