Library Circles: Another Empty House

For the Fall iteration of Library Circles, the jameel’s series of research, talks and experimental interventions by UAE practitioners that explores alternative research methodologies and representations, Jameel Library presents a display by Another Empty House. This collaborative research-based project by Juneida Abdul Jabber, Shahnaz Hashim, and Zahra Mansoor was established in 2020 to focus on the contemporary Gulf/Malayali experience.

Their research delves into economic, patriarchal, and capitalist behaviours that have contributed to a rise in vacant domestic houses in Kerala. It has included collecting and mapping tropes in film, advertising, YouTube videos, and oral histories to create a nuanced understanding of this issue. Another Empty House aims to document and map urban networks, exploring transience, social class, aspirations, gender, and space, and the effects of this socio-economic and political issue.
