LA Dance Project: Romeo & Juliet Suite

Benjamin Millepied is a former principal dancer at New York City Ballet whose raison d’etre is to make classical ballet accessible: that’s the essential purpose of his dance company, LA Dance Project, and his condensed version of Shakespeare’s story is told in contemporary-classical dance, set to the music of Sergei Prokofiev and featuring video transmitted live to onstage screens. There are no tutus or pointe shoes in sight, though the choreography is very clearly derived from classical technique by the 12-strong company. The classic story is also cut to the minimum, updated into a saga of modern urban love.
The live projections capture the dancers in real-time from unexpected places within the theatre; this dynamic interplay between live performance and screens offers fresh perspectives on the tale of the star-crossed lovers. “Romeo and Juliet Suite is unlike anything I have seen,” said the Bachtrack review of this much-acclaimed production’s summer 2024 season at Sydney Opera House. “It’s geometric sorcery, and a remarkable fusion of dance and cinematography: accessible, challenging and entertaining.”
Highly recommended, and given that it’s only in town for two performances – there’s another show at 8pm on 18 October – it’s sure to sell out, even at the somewhat elevated prices.
