Godfrey Reggio’s groundbreaking 1982 film Koyaanisqatsi set to an influential score by Philip Glass (his first major film success) and performed live by the Philip Glass Ensemble. Taking its title from a Hopi word meaning “life out of balance,” Koyaanisqatsi is a hypnotic exploration of nature and urbanisation; the footage of natural landscapes and elemental forces paints an apocalyptic vision of the collision of two worlds. The visual tone poem contains neither dialogue nor a conventional plot, its tone being set by the juxtaposition of images and music. The stunning visuals and an impressive score from Philip Glass make this a must-see – especially with the music played live.
