The ultimate tragic/romantic ballet – beautiful young peasant girl fall in loves with a disguised nobleman but goes mad and dies of heartbreak when his true identity is revealed by a rival; she then becomes a ghost, one of a vengeful sisterhood of unmarried women who died after being betrayed by their lovers and take revenge in the night by dancing men to death by exhaustion. Powerful stuff.
The Polish National Ballet and Orchestra, conducted by Patrick Fournillier, bring the full classic experience to Dubai Opera, Maina Gielgud has recreated the original 1841 choreography by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot.
There are performance at 8pm on 18, 19 and 20 September, and at 2pm and 7pm on 21 September. Prices are high, but this is a chance to see the standard in romantic ballets (and if we’re lucky enough to get Chinara Alizade dancing Giselle, that will be a real bonus …)
