El Norte | The North: dir Gregory Nava (1983)

“A Grapes of Wrath for our time” said critic Roger Ebert of this lovingly rendered, heartbreaking story of hope and survival.  After their family is murdered by the government during a civil war massacre in Guatemala, brother and sister Enrique and Rosa flee north through Mexico to the United States – where they find life is not what they’d hoped for. Gregory Nava’s groundbreaking social realistic narrative was also the first independent film to be nominated for an Academy Award for screenwriting. Powerful stuff, and not to be missed.
