The longest running American musical in Broadway history – and “the most exciting musical of its generation” (The Times) – is coming to Yas for a decent run from 12-22 September 2024.
First seen in 1975 and still an all-round stunner, it is based on a 1926 play by one-time reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins and is built around actual crimes on which she reported; the book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse paints a tantalising tale of passion, murder, greed, betrayal, and redemption through the journey of two fiercely competitive women – aspiring jazz performer Roxie Hart and former vaudevillian (and double-murderess) Velma Kelly. John Kander and Fred Ebb were responsible for the score, with each song modelled on a traditional vaudeville number or a vaudeville performer – a format that helped to make explicit the show’s comparison between justice, showbiz, and contemporary society.
This production is basically the 1996 Broadway revival, which has been touring around the world more or less ever since. It is produced by Barry and Fran Weissler and choreographed by Tony Award winner Ann Reinking very much in the style of Bob Fosse. Direction is by another Tony Award winner, Walter Bobbie.
