Al Raheel | Departure

The third performance for this revival of the contemporary theatre piece that uses poetry to explore how the rapidly evolving lifestyle in the UAE and its bilingual reality affected notions of womanhood and redefined belonging for women in different stages of life. Weaving Arabic and English language poetry with projected images and movement, Al Raheel | Departure has been created by Emirati writer and performance artist Reem Almenhali and the American director (and NYUAD professor) Joanna Settle, originally from a series of poems written in response to women persisting and developing across childhood, womanhood, and ageing.
