Summer Cinema: Cities, Cinema and People

Jameel’s Summer Cinema, organised in collaboration with The Culturist Film Club and curated by Hind Mezaina, ia a season of free-to-attend films about cities, archives, and the ways we live and remember together – plus a special evening celebrating David Lynch. Audiences are encouraged to engage in “collective viewing” – each screening includes informal talks with filmmakers, artists, and special guests – and food and refreshments will be available.
The films:
Behind the Sun: dir Bentley Brown (2023, 17 min)
Through metaphor, biography and stunning NASA footage, Canadaina filmmaker Bentley Brown presents us with a very personal filmic essay that explores a failed relationship and sweeping societal changes in the city of Jeddah.
Cairo, As Told By Chahine: dir Youssef Chahine (Egypt, 23 min – still above)
A concise masterpiece by the noted Egyptian filmmaker Youssef Chahine that utilises his characteristic sense of artistic digression to transform this portrait of a city into a self-portrait of a filmmaker. The film was banned in Egypt for its realistic portrayal of Cairo.
