A timely documentary by French-Senegalese filmmaker and actress Mati Diop which won the Golden Bear at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival. The film follows the return of 26 royal treasures from France to the Republic of Benin, tracing the impact of colonial plunder and the evolving dialogue around repatriation. The Hollywood Reporter review described it as “richly layered and resonant … This directorial flourish liberates the looted treasures from being mere objects, with smart use of subjective camera helping to make them come alive as characters”.
