Hors d’haleine | Breathing Underwater: dir Eric Lamhene (2024)

This emotional, character-driven drama is set in the secretive world of a women’s shelter. It tells the story of Emma (Carla Juri) who arrives at the shelter in the dead of night, covered in bruises and unexpectedly pregnant. As she grapples with her pregnancy and her emotional shackles to her husband Marc, Emma rediscovers lost facets of herself through her unlikely camaraderie and strife with the women and children of the shelter; individual traumas intertwine and a delicate sisterhood emerges as they push one another to fight for their self-worth and independence.
This screening, which is in French with English subtitles, is part of SUAD’s Francofilm Festival– a series of five films showing on consecutive nights between 19 and 23 April, celebrating the French language and the diversity of Francophone cinema.
