Goodbye Julia: dir Mohamed Kordofani (2023)

Mona is a retired singer in a tense marriage in Northern Sudan. Wracked by guilt after covering up a murder, she tries to make amends by taking in the dead man’s southern Sudanese widow, Julia, and her son, Daniel. Mona can’t confess her transgressions to Julia, so she tries to adjust to a new status quo — but the country’s turmoil is going to find its way into her home and make her come face to face with her sins … The Cineuropa review said: “Mohamed Kordofani offers up wonderful snapshots, overviews and explanations of all the nuances of the acute Sudanese situation of the time”.
