Classic surrealistic slapstick from France: Zazie is a brash and precocious ten-year-old (Catherine Demongeot) who comes to Paris for a whirlwind weekend with her rakish uncle (Philippe Noiret); he and the viewer get more than they bargained for, however. Louis Malle anarchic, surrealistic comedy, based on a popular novel by Raymond Queneau that had been considered unadaptable, rides roughshod over the City of Light. Made with real flair, Zazie dans le métro is stream-of-consciousness slapstick, full of great visual gags and editing tricks … Highly recommended. In French, with English subtitles.
