Young Frankenstein: dir Mel Brooks (1974)

The cast and director are obviously having great fun in this affectionate tribute to the classic Hollywood monster movies of the 1930s and 40s. Gene Wilder is the titular inheritor of his grandfather’s Transylvanian castle, where he attempts to recreate his famous ancestor’s attempts to reanimate a dead body. It has all the usual (perhaps in this case slightly unusual) suspects: the reluctant scientist has a high-strung fiancé (Madeleine Kahn), there’s a pop-eyed shifty humpback called Igor (Marty Feldman) and a dizzy lab assistant (Terri Garr), the castle has a hideous head housekeeper (Cloris Leachman), and, of course, there’s a monster – albeit one with a kind heart (Peter Boyle).
