torn

Written and directed by award winning Australian writer/director Alex Broun, assisted by Alexander Rondel, torn is described as “a sexy, fast-paced, brutal, funny and at times moving dissection of post-millennium relationships … With echoes of Patrick Marber’s Closer, torn is about the impossibility and possibility of love in a modern world where choices abound and nothing is forever”. We’re inclined to trust that summary; Alex Broun has an excellent track record in scripting and directing engaging, entertaining and sometimes illuminating theatre, and torn had a very successful run earlier this year in the QEII Theatre .
The piece is set in modern-day New York, with four people in various stages of connection – lawyer Susan (Nadine Basiony) is in a relationship with advertising executive Cade (Osman Aboubakr: that’s them above), and Gerry (Basel Yafi), a voice-over artist, is in love with Susan’s PA Daniella (Kethy Kist).
It will be performed at The Fridge in what’s termed “intimate mode” with the audience fully immersed in the action (“they will be so close that they can literally reach out and touch the actors … although we are hoping that they won’t!”). Quite apart from the theatrical experience, this means there will be only 70 seats available per performance – early booking is recommended.
There are 8pm performances on 11, 12 and 13 October, with a 5pm show too on 12 and 13 October.
