Winners of eighth HIPA

The winners have been announced for the Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award, the world’s richest.

The theme for this eight season of HIPA was Hope. As HIPA Secretary General, Ali bin Thalith said: “This award was launched in 2011 to honour the arts and promote social awareness and its fundamental role in shaping the future of civilizations … The arts have changed the course of history, and are capable of changing the shape of the future”.

This year’s crop was especially strong on social comment, with the $120,000 Grand Prize going to Edwin Ong Wee Kee from Malaysia for an image (above) that documents a moment of powerful humanity – a Vietnamese mother who happens to have a speech disorder that does not prevent her from feeling hopeful for her children.

The Hope category itself was won by Fanny Octavianus from Indonesia. Other winners:

  • General – Colour Chen-Kuang Chen, Taiwan
  • General – Black & White Aun Raza, France
  • Portfolio Haitham Nouraldin, Palestine
  • Aerial Photography (Video) Florian Ledoux, France

Next year’s theme is Water. The deadline for submissions is usually the end of October, but we’ll confirm that when we know.
