SUMMARY:Elusive Territories
DESCRIPTION:Elusive Territories is group show for 15 prominent Palestinian artists whose work examines the relationship between exile\, memory\, and homeland – three dynamics that constantly engage with one another\, especially at this critical time. Says the gallery: “Throughout the exhibition\, elusive yet persistent glimpses of an absent homeland emerge from between the cracks of the abstraction. For these artists\, abstraction becomes a tool for piecing together fragments of Palestine\, in an ongoing process of identity formation journey …” \nParticipating artists: \nYazan Abu Salameh|\nNabil Anani\nTayseer Barakat\nKamal Boullata\nBenji Boyadgian\nSamia Halaby\nKhaled Hourani\nMohammed Joha\nBashir Makhoul\nSliman Mansour\nHosni Radwan\nRana Samara\nRuba Salameh\nSamir Salameh\nVera Tamari \nTo 30 June.

SUMMARY:Bashar Khalaf: The Field of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Khalaf explores the relationship between self\, object\, and other through a focus on ‘steel’ in public spaces: The Field of Dreams\, or “dreams as minefields”\, remind us of the modern structures of unbridled capitalism and the transformative domination of life. This is delivered via two series of oil paintings\, The Junk Garden and The Protective Shield. The latter is particularly powerful\, using garbage bins as symbols of resistance during the First Intifada – juxtaposing their role as protective barriers against the colonial settler machinery with the oppressive use of steel barrels to enforce isolation.\nKhalaf asks questions about humanity’s choices in the face of hegemony and the nature of freedom in contemporary society. \nTo 1 June.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Saher Nassar: Chronicles from the Storm
DESCRIPTION:In this new body of work\, Nassar reflects on prolonged states of loss\, endurance\, and moral exhaustion\, translating deeply personal and collective experiences across multiple mediums. Says the gallery: “Rather than seeking resolution or catharsis\, the works dwell in a state of moral exhaustion where clarity is suspended and certainty dissolves. This prolonged experience becomes a reluctant muse\, granting the artist the distance needed to engage more deeply with his subject matter: studies of loss\, the collapse of familiar symbols\, the formation of new convictions\, and an intimacy with endurance that arrives without epiphany or closure …”

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Mohammed Joha: Houselessness
DESCRIPTION:In his latest work\, Palestinian artist Mohammed Joha redefines collage as “an architecture of rupture and reassembly\, both a method and a metaphor”. His works bring together scraps of fabric\, paper\, cardboard\, plastic and other salvaged materials\, textures pulled from shattered environments and fragments of personal history\, to form compressed\, jostling topographies; they convey not only violence and destruction\, but also endurance and resistance: a continuation of life within erasure.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Ruba Salameh: Refined Compositions
DESCRIPTION:In the face of genocide\, Palestinian artist Ruba Salameh finds her way forward through abstract painting – weaving her own narrative while connecting across generations to the work of art historian and artist Kamal Boullata. \nThis exhibition reflects primarily on the persistence of certain symbols\, such as the Palestinian flag\, in the work of Palestinian artists. Reducing the colour palette as a gesture encouraged Salameh to revisit an act similar to that of other Palestinian artists before her\, as an act of reclamation. It revealed how\, even with the passing of time\, these visual elements have remained charged with urgency and continue to inhabit the thoughts and practices of Palestinian artists.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Bashir Makhoul: The Promise
DESCRIPTION:New works by the noted Palestinian artist. The title The Promise suggests a poetic and ambiguous statement of intent; a promise is made but can also be broken. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Amirhossein Bayani: The Season of Ruin's Remembrance
DESCRIPTION:Iranian artist Amirhossein Bayani’s vividly coloured and highly detailed landscape paintings s explore themes around life\, immigration\, and freedom. Each of the paintings in this series was inspired by a real-life story of an Iranian woman who fought for freedom and lost her life; but rather than illustrating heroic or tragic stories\, Bayani envisions these figures in other-worldly forest settings – they appear memorialised as statues or translucent spirits\, glimpsed between the trees\, standing on a rock or on the edge of a lake. There’s an eeriness to the scenes: the shades of green are vivid to the point of being luminous\, the foliage so dense it creates a wall\, blocking out the light. “This tension between beauty and horror\, for me\, describes the struggle for emancipation\,” says Bayani. “It all depends on your perspective.”

SUMMARY:Amirhossein Bayani: The Season of Ruin's Remembrance
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition of new paintings by the Iranian artist. “As an artist from the Middle East\,” says Bayani\, “the concept of liberation often seems distant and unattainable. Yet\, when I look at nature\, I am able to imagine a future filled with peace …” Bayani’s vibrant and intricate paintings deploy natural elements to express complex emotional states and envision a more harmonious future. \nEach piece in this series is inspired by the true story of an Iranian woman who fought for freedom and ultimately lost her life. Instead of depicting them in heroic or tragic narratives\, Bayani places these figures within other-worldly forest settings – they appear memorialised as statues or translucent spirits\, glimpsed between the trees\, standing on a rock or on the edge of a lake. There’s an eeriness to the scenes: the shades of green are vivid to the point of being luminous\, the foliage so dense it creates a wall\, blocking out the light. “This tension between beauty and horror\, for me\, describes the struggle for emancipation\,” says Bayani. “It all depends on your perspective.” \nTo 6 April.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Nabil Anani: The Land and I
DESCRIPTION:Nabil Anani has been focussed on painting landscapes for over two decades. His work demonstrates how the land is central to his identity and existence\, and how it is also integral to its people; in The Land and I\, Anani sees himself as inseparable from the earth he paints. \nThe exhibition features textured and colourful paintings of the Palestinian landscape\, a celebration of Palestine that he dreams of – nature\, without checkpoints\, cement barriers\, or settlements. He often uses natural materials\, like wood\, straw\, dried herbs\, seeds\, and spices\, infusing his paintings with the very elements of the earth that he  portrays. By grounding his art in the materiality of the land itself\, Anani seeks to reclaim the Palestinian landscape from the continuous attempts of colonial erasure\, emphasising the sense of attachment\, belonging\, and continuity.

SUMMARY:Saher Nassar: The Front Side Strikes the Most
DESCRIPTION:Soldiers undergo rigorous training\, sometimes bordering on indoctrination\, to execute commands often beyond their personal desires or intentions. They become pieces in a domino effect\, operating in environments they cannot control. \nThe latest works by Saher Nassar examine the psychology of the soldier and the tangible actions they impose on others\, adopting an observational rather than a scientific approach. It remains neutral\, with neither judgment nor apologies. \nThe exhibition is curated by Giuseppe Moscatello. \nTo 30 December \nAbove: Saher Nassar\, Children of the Occupation (2023)

SUMMARY:Giampiero Romanò: Fragile\, Handle with Care
DESCRIPTION:Romanò combines artistic creativity with his skills in restoration and preservation. He works with antique mirrors and frames\, transforming used pieces of framed mirrors into whole new entities; “Romanò’s ‘mirrors could look rich and beautiful\, yet they are extremely fragile\, exactly like people” as the gallery puts it. And “the artworks are also a representation of a journey to parallel temporal universes and are signs of revolution on the conventional in a bid for change”. \nPast\, present\, and future find a way to co-exist in his artworks. They combine history and memories (the old frames) with the present (people’s faces reflected in the mirrors)\, and he leaves room for the future.”We the human beings are the mirror\, the element that should give cohesion to the frame which is our history\,” he says. \nTo 17 September.
