SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Jane Beveridge: Local
DESCRIPTION:The Dubai-based artist’s first solo show aim to capture the essence of Dubai\, and of belonging. Says the artist\, who is currently Head of Art at Dubai College: “my visual palette and material inspiration are rooted in the streets. I am drawn to the beauty of cracked\, stained\, and weathered walls as well as surfaces patched with plaster or paint – they read like large abstract paintings. Corrugated cardboard\, concrete\, sand\, rust\, tangled wires\, weathered wood – all find their way into my work\, each carrying a story of time\, place and texture …”

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Huma Shoaib: Fractal
DESCRIPTION:Huma Shoaib has always been an interesting\, thoughtful artist\, creating patterns from sacred geometry and looking for analogies in life and nature. She often uses paper cut silhouettes layered with detailed graphite drawings that typically adds three-dimensional depth to otherwise flat imagery. \nAccording to the gallery\, this new show is “an exhibition that explores chaos as fractal paradox; where perfect\, infinite patterns of existence\, spirituality and free will will repeat across scales\, blurring the line between divine order and self-destructive conflict …” Significantly influenced by sufi ideologies\, Huma Shoaib’s work tries to break down this chaos into simple fractal structures that speak of order\, perfection\, the divine.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Hussein Al Mohasen: The Truth
DESCRIPTION:New work from the Saudi artist\, who has been exhibited all over the Middle East since 1999. His practice is shaped by poetry from the Arab world and “the complex intersections between modern spaces and personal freedoms”; he aims to present the contemporary Arab experience after the fashion of the poetry and music\nthat inspired him. \nThe title is explained by the artist’s curatorial text: “I believe that visual art is an important medium to make people see and perceive the truth … With my new body of work I am trying to reach what is beyond reality\, to go where I want the viewers to experience a visual journey\, which makes them see reality in a hopeful\, peaceful\, manner; even if reality\, sometimes\, is not as desirable as we want …”

SUMMARY:Naqsh Raj: Half Light
DESCRIPTION:With this exhibition Naqsh Raj “invents a personal tool for grounding and connection\, balancing order with anarchy\, discipline with instinct and darkness with sparks of illumination … The repetitive expression in her work hints at a longing for predictability\, while the grid becomes a framework of order that offers comfort. Within this structure\, vertical dashes appear as symbols of strength\, an elemental part of her visual language”. \nIn her paintings\, brushwork collides with the mechanical application of paint: the thickness of the paint invites a tactile response. The characteristic grid over her work contrasts with these impulses of freedom and Raj has a good relationship with geometry: she frequently activates a composition by dividing it into two\, opening space for a dual approach within the same frame. As the gallery puts it: “essentially\, her exploration in a self-imposed structure reveals a deep commitment to her evolving language”. \nTo 8 January. \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Tor Seidel: Riposte
DESCRIPTION:Tor Siedel explores how ‘vandalism’ by environmental activists in triptychs that consider whether these attacks can also be considered performative acts of art. He focuses on the protagonists’ actionism\, the shock or entertainment value for visitors\, and the professional dissemination of videos of the attack groups on the internet; says the gallery\, “this leads him to conclude that these are not only ambivalent forms of protest\, but also independent artistic acts. With paint bombs and soup\, the actors succeed in transforming significant works of art in unexpected ways and creating new experiences within the museum environment”. \nSeidel reconstructs some of these attacks in three phases: a reenactment of the scene following the attack\, collecting statements from those involved\, and transforming the defacement into a new piece. The change\, whether lasting a few days or months during a complex or straightforward restoration\, means that the work has been forever altered by the presence of the videos filmed during the attack – “its transformation implies a new context of meaning that cannot be obscured”.

\nIn short\, actionism challenges the common perception that classical art and museum spaces are sacrosanct and expands the concept of art – it takes art as action out of the predictable white cube and into the spontaneous spaces of society\, transforming the museum into a stage for activist performances. \nTo 11 December.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Tajammul
DESCRIPTION:The XVA group show for the summer\, curated by Carina Vicente\, promises “beauty and grace\, capturing the aesthetics of the evolving art landscape in the contemporary Middle East” – the title comes from the Arabic root word for beauty (jamaal)\, “signifying efforts to make oneself beautiful in appearance or courteous in deed … In this way\, Tajammul implies a form of grace that comes from infusing places\, spaces\, and situations with a sense of elegant beauty and social ease. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Al Braithwaite: MATAB
DESCRIPTION:Al Braithwaite is a contemporary artist from London who works across a variety of disciplines including sculpture\, assemblage\, found material and installation. For this show\, Braithwaite’s Material Abstraction (MATAB) comprises textured panels arrayed as physical sculptures. Says the gallery: “Their weight and conceptual terrain is contained within a language where flatness of form and potency of industrial energy is paramount … The artist asks questions by intersectioning materials: what happens when this touches that\, when one idea divides another\, when this angle reaches for another angle\, or when that thing becomes empowered as an abstract entity?”

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Halim Al Karim: Mythological Love
DESCRIPTION:Experimental photography works by the Iraqui artist\, who says: “Inspired by the Sumerian myth and my archaeological excavations in our invisible life\, the mythological love series invites us to contemplate the magical love relationship between human women and the Anunnaki who descended from the heavens to planet Earth. This series reflects the concept of the eternal need to tame the anxious self; it embodies the mystery surrounding our existence between two worlds and challenges the construction of historical narratives about the ideologies of immortal love …”

SUMMARY:Al Braithwaite: MATAB
DESCRIPTION:Al Braithwaite is a contemporary artist from London who works across a variety of disciplines including sculpture\, assemblage\, found material and installation. For this show\, Braithwaite’s Material Abstraction (MATAB) comprises textured panels arrayed as physical sculptures. Says the gallery: “Their weight and conceptual terrain is contained within a language where flatness of form and potency of industrial energy is paramount … The artist asks questions by intersectioning materials: what happens when this touches that\, when one idea divides another\, when this angle reaches for another angle\, or when that thing becomes empowered as an abstract entity?” To 22 May

SUMMARY:Halim Al Karim: Mythological Love
DESCRIPTION:Experimental photography works by the Iraqui artist\, who says: “Inspired by the Sumerian myth and my archaeological excavations in our invisible life\, the mythological love series invites us to contemplate the magical love relationship between human women and the Anunnaki who descended from the heavens to planet Earth. This series reflects the concept of the eternal need to tame the anxious self; it embodies the mystery surrounding our existence between two worlds and challenges the construction of historical narratives about the ideologies of immortal love …” To 22 May

DESCRIPTION:Outsider artist CC\, better known to his mum as Alireza Asbahi\, shows his latest collection of carpets and hangings. It’s quirky\, interesting art that collages and layers materials and shapes. His works have the same kind of raw energy that is more commonly found these days in urban art; the subject matter though reflects Iranian history and culture\, particularly the traditional iconography like the Lion and the Sun.

SUMMARY:Yoshihiko Tsutsumi: Intersections of Cosmos
DESCRIPTION:Yoshihiko Tsutsumi is an accomplished graphic designer and artist (and a professional antiques dealer\, gallerist and art director too\, as it happens). Influenced by the immersive environment of his uncle’s cinema billboard painting atelier in Kumamoto\, Japan\, he draws inspiration from the captivating interplay of colours and dripping marks on the studio floor. \nTsutsumi’s creative process “unfolds like a meticulously crafted spider’s nest\, guided by an equidistant grid that shapes the evolution of lines and forms\,” says the gallery. “This grid serves as a blueprint\, orchestrating the sequential connection of outlines\, akin to the organic process of cell reproduction found in living beings\, rocks\, and metals.” \nHis layer series explores phenomena materialising through the accumulation of colours\, and these are immediate and impactful; more discreet and perhaps more cerebral are his monochromatic series\, where white pencil traces dance over black canvases or vice versa\, mirrors an architectural process where elements are meticulously plotted and constructed. \nTsutsumi was one of the standouts in XVA’s September group show on capturing movement in art; he’s an interesting\, exciting painter. Recommended. \nTo 9 January. \n
