SUMMARY:Mona Ayyash: The Clock Doesn’t Care
DESCRIPTION:For her first solo exhibition\, the culmination of the artist’s participation in the 2024 cycle of the 421 Artistic Development Program\, Ayyash presents a collaborative video piece focusing on small body movements. Created with a group of actors\, dancers\, and performance artists selected through an open call\, the piece is a study of repetitive non-functional movements\, without purpose or productivity\, that questions the tension between passing time and wasting time. \nThe collaborators filmed themselves responding to movement prompts\, encouraging them to consider what ‘doing nothing’ looks like; Ayyash extracts fragments of the collected footage and edits them to be layered one over the other or side-by-side\, constantly changing\, accumulating\, and subtracting. The everyday and the mundane are themes highlighted in work\, as the bodies are stuck repeating their movements in a loop\, going nowhere. Without a clear narrative to hold the spectator’s attention\, the exhibition serves as a playful inquiry into the objective nature of time. \nThis project grew from the artist’s earlier participation in the Homebound Residency Program in 2020\, where she produced a video work titled Folding Bellies in collaboration with five participants from the UAE art community. \nTo 25 August.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Hana El-Sagini: Counting Fingers
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition that presents a newly commissioned large-scale installation rooted in the instability and fragility of the human experience — more than 200 fantastical ceramic objects arranged as surreal sculptures and structures that replicate and reimagine healthcare spaces\, such as medical waiting rooms\, hospital corridors\, and doctors’ offices. \nProduced after Hana El-Sagini’s long battle with illness\, the objects featured in this exhibition encourage viewers to find joy and humour in envisioning a strange world where humans\, animals\, plants and inanimate objects blend into semi-distinguishable forms and figures. The exhibition prompts us to pause and contemplate the inherent mechanisms that enable us to endure pain\, trauma\, fear\, and adversity in ways that may potentially reconnect us with our vulnerability and\, ultimately\, our humanity. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Network Culture
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents projects by 12 of the participants in 421’s Homebound Residency Program\, which ran annually from spring 2020 to fall 2023; it is both a celebration of the work produced during the programme and an acknowledgement of the importance of community in artistic practice. \nThroughout the programme\, artists\, curators\, researchers\, and cultural workers came together digitally during the pandemic to support each other and to provide for generative conversations\, critique\, and creative experimentation. The title ‘network culture’ is also a nod to the historical phenomena we are witnessing today – an increasingly interconnected world that is shaped and influenced by the digital. \nThe works featured are by Yara Asmar\, Mona Ayyash\, BaRiya (above)\, Raghvi Bhatia\, Kimia Collective (Chahine Fellahi and Kaïs Aïouch)\, Nihaal Faizal\, Batool Desouky and Zain Mahjoub\, Engy Mohsen\, Roger Mokbel\, Fatma Belkıs and Onur Gökmen\, Mahshid Rafiei\, Ayesha Singh\, and Salem Al Suwaidi. \nThe exhibition also acts as a departure point for future artists who will be part of a new residency programme which will take place in winter 2024 at our new artist studios here in Abu Dhabi. \nTo 28 April. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Alam: dir Firas Khoury (2022)
DESCRIPTION:Tamer and his friends lead typical high school students’ lives until the arrival of the beautiful Maysaa.  As he grows closer to her\, Tamer agrees to take part in a mysterious flag operation dubbed ‘Alam’ on the eve of Israel’s Independence Day – which is of course a day of mourning for Palestinians. \nThis screens in 421’s four-day Palestinian Cinema Days\, a programme presented in collaboration with Reel Palestine and Cinema Akil that champions independent and alternative cinema for the stories\, heritage\, and identity of the Palestinian people. \nScreenings take place in 421’s outdoor plaza from 7pm on; films include subtitles in English and Arabic where applicable. \nAll proceeds go to Emirates Red Crescent’s Tarahum – for Gaza campaign. Admission is free with preregistration via the website and a receipt for a donation via Emirates Red Crescent’s payment link (the recommended donation is AED 50). \nIn-kind donations can also be dropped off at 421 throughout the film days from 10am to 9pm. Check this link for the sort of things that are needed. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Asma Belhamar: Solid Void
DESCRIPTION:This solo exhibition captures the tensions between shifting natural geographies and dynamic urban environments\, featuring new works inspired by the UAE’s architectural history. It narrates the topographic evolution of the UAE\, as influenced by Western classical modernity\, contemporary traditionalism in Islam\, and the historic trade relationships that shaped much of that landscape; the artist’s interpretation reveals the diversity and fragmentation of the design sensibilities that have made the nation’s aesthetic identity what it is today. \nSolid Void is the result of the 2023 edition of 421’s Artistic Development Program\, organised in collaboration with The Institute for Emerging Art. \nTo 31 December.

SUMMARY:Nine Nodes of Non-Being
DESCRIPTION:A group exhibition with works by nine artists\, thinkers\, filmmakers\, and researchers from East\, South\, Southeast Asia\, the MENA region\, and South America. Curated by Ritika Biswas\, it conceives of climate-related extinction through various states of negation and excess emerging from each of the nine artistic nodes to examine ways of existing more equitably within our ongoing crises. “The artistic worlds presented here are not merely signifiers of extinction but real propositions for the unknown … Through these excessive modes\, we think about ways of non-being and the climate apocalypse itself in ways we have likely never considered—through kitsch\, rest\, cringe\, bathos\, abstraction\, silliness\, melancholy\, madness\, and the weird”. \nThe artists: \n\nMariam AlZayani\nFayçal Baghriche\nClemencia Echeverri\nUNMAKE LAB\nMalik Irtiza Zara Mahmood\nAmba Sayal-Bennett\nApichatpong Weerasethakul\nAyman Zedani\n\nNine Nodes of Non-Being emerged from a year-long journey as part of the 421 Curatorial Development Exhibition Program in collaboration with The Bombay Institute for Critical Analysis and Research (BICAR). \nTo 31 December.
