SUMMARY:Ahmad AlAttar: Human in the Loop
DESCRIPTION:Human in the Loop is a sound-based interactive installation that takes the form of a game of hide-and-seek between visitors and an unseen algorithm. Hanging ropes are suspended from the ceiling and visitors are invited to pull on them; each pull interrupts the continuous ambient sounds of nature with a brief\, glitch-like sound. At first\, these responses may feel random\, but with repetition\, patterns begin to emerge; and when the correct rope is found\, the system responds with a distinct and heightened auditory moment – a brief reward that signals discovery. Almost immediately\, the algorithm relocates\, hiding once again within the field of ropes\, and the search resets. \nSo what begins as playful interaction gradually becomes an act of careful listening and navigation. Human in the Loop reflects a contemporary paradox: we take pleasure in interaction even as it draws us deeper into technological rhythms that are increasingly difficult to step away from. \nAhmad AlAttar\, currently is a Senior Robotics Engineer at Dubai Future Labs\, was a participant in the 2024 cycle of the 421 Artistic Development Program (ADP)\, facilitated by Jolaine Frizzell. During preparation for the exhibition he was also mentored by Khalid AlAwadhi\, Founder & CEO of Remal\, and Dr Pradeep Sharma\, Director of the Arts\, Culture and Heritage program at the Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation. \nTo 13 September.

DESCRIPTION:This major exhibition marks the ten-year anniversary of 421 Arts Campus and offers a chance to reflect on emergent artistic practices in the UAE\, their possibilities\, and challenges for the future. Featuring video\, performance\, installation\, and multimedia works\, it invites conversations around what it means to produce art in the UAE today from the vantage point of emerging artists\, collectives\, and grassroots initiatives\, to the influential role of cultural institutions that have supported and platformed these practices. \nIt’s realised through three curatorial perspectives\, all with time as a central theme: \nMunira Al Sayegh’s Leading to the Middle draws on the nature of expansion found within a ripple effect\, tracing the influence of key actors whose contributions have created lasting reverberations. Featured artists include Mohammed Ahmed Ibrahim\, Tarek Al-Ghoussein\, Bait15\, Adele Bea Cipste\, Khaled Esguerra\, Lamya Gargash\, and Auguste Nomeiakaite. \nIn Ghosts of Arrival\, Nadine Khalil meditates on the layered experience of arriving after a time of artistic ferment\, risk-taking\, and a now-mythologized energy that shaped cultural production in the UAE from the early 2000s to the mid-2010s. Rather than restaging or romanticizing the past\, Khalil proposes that the memory of risk itself becomes a material\, informing art-making and exhibition-building in the present. Featured artists include Tarek Al-Ghoussein\, Mona Ayyash and Nadine Ghandour\, Lucinda Childs\, Maria Daher\, Sarah Daher\, Cristalina Parra\, Bait Juma\, Hashel Lamki\, Sara Naim\, and Isaac Sullivan. \nMurtaza Vali’s SUN gathers artworks created and exhibited since 2015 that revolve around the idea and experience of the sun. Her section presents a nuanced view of the sun as a mediated and commodified presence – at once image\, data\, brand\, vibe\, and produc\, revealing the contradictions embedded in narratives of modernity and progress. Featured artists include Charbel-joseph H. Boutros\, Khalid Jauffer\, Raja’a Khalid\, Nima Nabavi\, Pratchaya Phinthong\, Sa Tahanan Co. (Jandri Angelo Aguilor\, Farah Fawzi Ali\, Preschelle Ann Bigueras\, Anna Bernice delos Reyes\, Alexandra Chaves\, Niño Consorte\, John Gatapia\, Balaram Ochangco\, Augustine Paredes\, Nicolas Roa)\, Shazia Salam\, and Lantian Xie. \nWhile all distinct in approach\, each section has a shared focus on the minor pivots rather than major inflection points. A look at overlooked gestures that accumulated over time\, Rays\, Ripples\, Residue illustrates the impact of subtle shifts that have shaped the past decade of art-making and exhibition building. It also sets the tone for the next decade of 421 and the UAE’s growing arts ecosystem\, asking what ideas will still carry forward into the next decade?

Early Starters is hosting creative sessions in Studio 2 & 3 and the Courtyard\, while Studio Play transforms into a hands-on Yallah Play experience led by Hannah Phillips with “sensory stations” and creative activities. \n421 says it’s a day made for kids “but with plenty for grown-ups to enjoy too”.

Featuring video\, performance\, installation\, and multimedia works\, it invites conversations around what it means to produce art in the UAE today from the vantage point of emerging artists\, collectives\, and grassroots initiatives\, to the influential role of cultural institutions that have supported and platformed these practices. \nIt’s realised through three curatorial perspectives\, all with time as a central theme: \nMunira Al Sayegh’s Leading to the Middle draws on the nature of expansion found within a ripple effect\, tracing the influence of key actors whose contributions have created lasting reverberations. Featured artists include Mohammed Ahmed Ibrahim\, Tarek Al-Ghoussein\, Bait15\, Adele Bea Cipste\, Khaled Esguerra\, Lamya Gargash\, and Auguste Nomeiakaite. \nIn Ghosts of Arrival\, Nadine Khalil meditates on the layered experience of arriving after a time of artistic ferment\, risk-taking\, and a now-mythologized energy that shaped cultural production in the UAE from the early 2000s to the mid-2010s. Rather than restaging or romanticizing the past\, Khalil proposes that the memory of risk itself becomes a material\, informing art-making and exhibition-building in the present. Featured artists include Tarek Al-Ghoussein\, Mona Ayyash and Nadine Ghandour\, Lucinda Childs\, Maria Daher\, Sarah Daher\, Cristalina Parra\, Bait Juma\, Hashel Lamki\, Sara Naim\, and Isaac Sullivan. \nMurtaza Vali’s SUN gathers artworks created and exhibited since 2015 that revolve around the idea and experience of the sun. Her section presents a nuanced view of the sun as a mediated and commodified presence – at once image\, data\, brand\, vibe\, and produc\, revealing the contradictions embedded in narratives of modernity and progress. Featured artists include Charbel-joseph H. Boutros\, Khalid Jauffer\, Raja’a Khalid\, Nima Nabavi\, Pratchaya Phinthong\, Sa Tahanan Co. The project includes talks\, workshops\, and public film screenings – which this evening includes all three. \nFilms\nFour short films focused on archives\, memories\, and identity followed by a short discussion between Mezaina\, Soliman and the audience. \nDon’t Get Too Comfortable dir Shaima Al Tamimi (2021\, 9 min) Questioning the continuous pattern of movement amongst Yemenis in diaspora\, the filmmaker fuses archival photographs and sourced footage\, calling attention to the collective feeling of statelessness and sense of being felt by migrants. \nWhere Am I From? / Ana min wein? dir Nouf Aljowaysir (2022\, 13 min) The filmmaker explores her identity by tracing her childhood and family memories by constructing her genealogical journey using two different voices\, her own and an AI ‘narrator’\, revealing stereotypes and biases derived from its algorithmic composition. \nStill Processing dir Sophy Romvari (2020\, 17 min) A box of stunning family photos unseen for decades awakens lost memories as they are viewed for the first time on camera. \nThe Flowers Stand Silently\, Witnessing dir Theo Panagopoulos (2024\, 17 min) When a filmmaker of Palestinian descent based in Scotland unearths a rarely-seen Scottish film archive of Palestinian wildflowers\, he decides to reclaim the footage. He describes watching a meteor shower – blue fire lighting up the sky followed by a noise so loud people thought it was an earthquake – and he joins men looking for the debris … \nAdnane Baraka’s cinematic essay about the origins of human life screens in dialogue with the ongoing Abdullah Al Saadi exhibition Sites of Memory\, Sites of Amnesia as part of a film programme curated by researcher and scholar Rasha Salti that invites audiences to reflect on the intricate interplay between remembrance and forgetting\, evoking profound connections to collective and personal histories.
