SUMMARY:Sharjah International Film Festival for Children & Youth (SIFF)
DESCRIPTION:The 12th Edition of SIFF takes place 6 to 11 October at VOX Cinemas in City Centre Al Zahia with what looks like a strong lineup – 76 films (chosen from 1\,740 submissions!) representing 26 countries. South Korea is participating as a Country of Honor\, giving audiences the opportunity to explore the way Korean cinema’ has become a major contributor to South Korea’s creative economy\, soft power\, and tourism industry. \nThey include three Middle East premieres – animated feature Miss Moxy (dir Wip Vernooij and Vincent Bal\, Netherlands)\, the story of a cat who has to find her way back home with a couple of unlikely friends; Sarah Talab’s Saudi feature Hajeer\, about a young musician whose life is turned upside down after suffering a childhood illness that causes him to lose his hearing; and Seryeong Jeong’s 2:15PM\, a remarkable poignant tale that you should really see if you can. Ten-year-old Hyunsu comes across six-year-old Jo Minha\, who has been isolated from the world by her abusive father; understanding the power of kindness\, Hyunsu sneaks visits to Jo Minha at precisely 2:15pm each day for a fleeting ten minutes together … \nOn the sidelines\, SIFF Pop-Up will be hosted in Sharjah Research Technology & Innovation Park with a series of activations and workshops aiming to encourage the young to get involved with film. \nThe website is less than helpful at the moment: right now you can’t tell exactly what’s showing when\, or how much the tickets might be. Hopefully it will get sorted out …

SUMMARY:Sharjah International Film Festival for Children and Youth (SIFF)
DESCRIPTION:SIFF is back for its eleventh edition with an expanded official selection of 98 films (last year had just over 80) selected from 1\,834 submissions from 73 countries. Zimbabwe takes part for the first time; Palestine’s selection as Guest of Honor makes good sense\, given both consistent success of Palestinian films and the miserable situation in the country. Sheikha Jawaher bint Abdullah Al Qasimi\, DG of the Festival noteds that “Palestinian cinema continues to deliver thought-provoking\, visually captivating works that reflect the pulse of Palestinian society”. \nThe Green Carpet platform\, a highlight of the festival\, will feature four premieres – Amakor\, a Kuwaiti comedy drama directed by Ahmed Al-Khodary; The Trainers\, an Italian film directed by Andrea Joplin; The Teacher\, directed by the British-Palestinian filmmaker Farah Nabulsi (reviewed as “riveting\, eye-opening … an intimate exploration of life in occupied Palestine” by The Hollywood Reporter); and Diplodocus\, an engaging animation about a little green dinosaur from the Polish filmmaker Wojtek Wawszczyk (above). \nThere’s a good selection of films in competition – 11 in the International Short Films category\, 17 Arabic shorts\, 14 animated shorts\, four animated features and a dozen live-action features\, 11 documentaries\, 19 in the student category\, and a cheery 10  for Films Made by Children and Young People. \nThe festival’s film market includes some practical workshops including a panel session on independent film distribution and another on the future of the Palestinian narrative in cinema. \n

SUMMARY:Sharjah International Film Festival for Children and Youth (SIFF)
DESCRIPTION:SIFF is back for its tenth edition on 22 to 28 October with an official selection of 81 films from 37 countries (slightly down on last year\, which saw 90+ from 47 countries). But “the new edition promises to exceed audience expectations” said Sheikha Jawaher Bint Abdullah Al Qasimi\, SIFF’s director\, in her press statement; certainly there will be three world premieres and no fewer than 53 Middle East premieres. \nThere are screenings in seven categories\, all competitive – Student Films\, GCC Short Films\, International Shorts\, Animations\, Animated Features\, and Feature Films. There’s also a Green Carpet platform which will offer audiences the chance to see films (four of them) with a director’s Q&A; there are also eight talks and ‘open discussions’. \nWe can’t currently tell you much more than that; the website does list what films are being shown and when\, but otherwise it’s largely bereft of useful information and clearly has some very outdated pages (including the director’s message\, which still refers to the online-only Festival of 2021). Apparently ticket prices are the normal charges for Vox films and you can book them online via the Vox website as usual; the main location is Vox City Centre Al Zahia but we understand Mirdif City Centre and City Centre Ajman will have the screenings as well. \nAbove: still from Titina\, dir Kajsa Naess (Norway/Belgium\, 2022)
