SUMMARY:Manjit Bawa: I Was Born a Poet …
DESCRIPTION:Paintings and drawings by Manjit Bawa (1941-2008)\, a modernist master of 20th-century Indian figuration whose work is distinguished by expressive line and colour. To 30 April. \nThe exhibition marks the inauguration of Volte Art Projects’ new Alserkal Avenue space under the name Volte Masters – the focus of which “will be to showcase international modern masters and create new art historical dialogues around their work”. \nThe main direction would appear to be the promotion of modern Indian masters in particular; for Alserkal Art Week\, two works by the noted Indian video artist Nalini Malani are being presented by Alserkal Avenue with support from Volte Art Projects. Curated by Nada Raza\, Director of Alserkal Arts Foundation\, these will be at Concrete between 25 February and 3 March – an evening outdoor projection of the multimedia installation Ballad of a Woman (2023)\, with Malani’s 2020 Whitechapel commission Can You Hear Me? showing inside the space. \nAbove: Manjit Bawa\, Krishna (offset print). SUMMARY:Rashid Rana: It Lies Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Rashid Rana characteristically challenges our perceptions of scale through the intermingling of both small and large imagery\, exploring and revealing patterns and similarities. In It Lies Beyond (above)\, the imposing proportions invite viewers to immerse themselves in the intricate imagery and multifaceted symbolism of an ominously serene seascape; the experience is enhanced through Augmented Reality that overlays content on to real life environments – which on closer inspection reveals heaps of garbage which of course refer to the issues being raised at COP28. \nThe accompanying work\, Desperately Seeking Paradise (below)\, raises questions about how we interpret various points of view\, our understanding of scale\, and explores the formal concerns of two and three dimensionality in form. At first it appears to be a minimalist stainless steel sculpture; with a shift in viewpoint it transforms into a panoramic skyline of an imaginary city. The images of high-rise buildings have been derived from hundreds of tiny photographs of houses in Lahore; the micro forms the macro in scale to become the conversation. \n \nShare on Social Mediablueskyfacebookxlinkedinemail

SUMMARY:Shambhavi Singh: To see a world in a grain of sand ...
DESCRIPTION:Singh appropriates\, distorts\, and symbolically creates surfaces and patterns within nature; raised in a farming family\, it is the rural landscape\, the farmer\, and agricultural implements that find form in her practice.\nSo the sickle\, used primarily for harvesting or reaping\, is magnified in scale not just as an implement but a metaphor. It becomes a ‘point of entry’\, where eight hundred sickles multiply to become birds in flight. Woven sieves become recollections of hidden narratives of those women at work – husking the grain … Singh merges the perceptual and conceptual knowledge in ever-changing forms. \nThis exhibition is curated by Sasha Altaf. \nTo 27 October. \nShare on Social Mediablueskyfacebookxlinkedinemail
