SUMMARY:Anirban Dasgupta: Cry Daddy
DESCRIPTION:Anirban Dasgupta returns to Dubai with his third stand-up special\, fresh from its debut last year at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and a successful run at the Soho Theatre in London. \nKolkata born and Mumbai based\, Anirban Dasgupta comes across as mild-mannered and playful. But this cleverly structured show is sharper and more carefully honed than this might imply … His childhood dream was to become a sportsman. Now a new father navigating the chaotic second half of his life\, he’s wondering whether everything – from comedy to parenting – is actually just a game. Who’s winning? Who’s losing? And does anyone really know the score? \nThe show unfolds as an immersive stand-up match played with the audience\, where each joke is scored and the contest continues until the final punchline. With yellow cards\, half-time pep talks\, trash talking\, and shirt swapping\, the audience becomes part of the action\, left debating scores and outcomes as the show goes down to the wire … \nThe evening will be hosted and opened by Arpit Varshne\, who quit a perfectly good job as a Dubai radio jockey to move to India ain the pursuit of stand-up comedy greatness. Sharp\, self-aware\, and just the right amount of unhinged\, Arpit sets the tone before Anirban takes the mic …

SUMMARY:Karn:Warrior
DESCRIPTION:Now this sounds like a lot of fun – an immersive hi-tech retelling of the story of the Mahabharata epic hero Karn. Raised in a humble village\, unaware of his noble birth\, a stable boy among princes\, Karn’s journey leads to the legendary Kurukshetra War\, where Krishna reveals his true origins and Karn must face his sworn enemy Arjun … \nThis production is described as “like stepping inside a video game”. Karn:Warrior is produced by ANT Management with a raft of Dubai theatre notables – direction by Alex Broun\, fight routines choreographed by Narsimha “Nattu” Chouhan\, movement by Gillian Rhodes (who also stars)\, stunning big-screen LED visuals by Montel Goodrick Maiava\, music by Daniel Faber (who we think is responsible for Male Fireworks\, a track on magpie’s go-to playlist\, and who certainly is one of the people behind the Rair oxygen-and-water enterprise) … \nAlex Broun described the show to us as “a uniquely modern take on the story”. It’s not just the video game setting: “most of the main characters in the Mahabharata are male\, but we have cast three exceptional female actors to play all the roles. This brings a very different take on these legendary stories\, highlighting moments and ideas that are often glossed over in other versions …” We’re promised that “Karn:Warrior is fast moving\, explosive and highly entertaining 60 minutes – it will literally be leaping off the QE2 stage. One you definitely shouldn’t miss.” \nThere are multiple characters but just three actors. Newcomer Anita Nayyar plays Karn; Rochelle Goodrick is Arjun\, Karn’s arch enemy\, and takes other roles including Duroydhan\, his benefactor; Gillian Rhodes plays more than 10 different parts ranging from an eight-year-old girl to an 80-year-old guru. \nIt plays for one day only\, with shows at 2pm and 7pm.

SUMMARY:Romeo and Juliet
DESCRIPTION:The final performance for this version of the Shakespeare play – featuring a five-piece band\, songs by Queen\, dancing\, and lots of swordfighting. \nSays the blurb: “Imagine Shakespeare’s classic envisioned by Freddie Mercury\, blending elements of Zeffirelli\, Baz Luhrmann\, Jamie Lloyd and Bridgerton into a magical spectacle. The production features iconic Queen hits such as Bohemian Rhapsody\, We Will Rock You\, Somebody to Love\, Who wants to live forever and We are the Champions …” Director Alex Broun says the adaptation by Lydia DeSouza “takes the original story to a whole new level and reveals magic that may often be lost in the text. The show literally has everything – dancing\, duels\, romance\, singing\, and one of the greatest love stories of all time. This will be a night of pure joy you won’t forget.” And of course it opens on Valentine’s Day … \nThe production is directed by Broun for the highly rated Cross Bronx Crew\, “an award-winning theatre group that loves the art of acting\, making good theatre\, and having fun while we do it …”. The cast features a mix of some of the city’s top actors plus recent Sharjah Performing Arts Academy graduates ”and exciting new faces”. Musical direction is by Sam Randall\, choreography by Beth Mitchinson from Music Theatre Dubai\, and fight choreography by Jay Nagjee.

SUMMARY:The Ice Hole – A Cardboard Comedy
DESCRIPTION:This production debuted for four performances in May and two in July; all sold out (deservedly). It’s now back for a run at Theatre by QE2 and these are its last two shows (at 3pm and 8pm). \nIt’s an English version of an award-winning French comedy from 2021\, Les Gros Patinent Bien\, by Pierre Guillois and Olivier Martin-Salvan. They reworked the original for an Anglophone audience at the Edinburgh Festival as The Ice Hole\, and there were rave reviews for a show that has an imposing Shakespearian actor telling incredible stories of a man journeying through Europe under the curse of a mermaid he’d absent-mindedly caught in a fjord. The actor is accompanied by a put-upon flunky (maybe a stage manager?) who strives with the help of hastily-scribbled cardboard signs and boxes to help us understand the meaning of this journey … \nIt’s fun\, mad as trumpets\, with echoes of Monty Python\, Laurel and Hardy\, and the Mighty Boosh. Matthew T Corbett directs Sadiq Saboowala and Patrick Albrecht\, two-time winners of the local Short+Sweet Dubai Theatre Festival\, for Complices Théâtre. \n

SUMMARY:Meeting Mozart
DESCRIPTION:This acclaimed interactive experience for the young has been a major success for Sydney Opera House; it’s a 40-minute show aimed at children aged 2 to 10 (and their families) which blends live music\, storytelling\, and song to introduce young audiences to the world of classical music “in a fun\, participatory\, and inclusive environment”; Mozart\, his wife and a string quartet help the audience explore the instruments\, scores\, and themes that characterise his best known compositions. \nThe show has curriculum connections to Performing Arts\, Fine Arts\, Social Studies – History & Culture and is reportedly great for Emotional Development. A free teacher’s resource pack provides classroom exercises and curriculum links. \nThere are performances at 11am\, 2pm and 5pm on Saturday and Sunday (2-3 November) and 9am and 11am on monday and tuesday (4-5 November); it moves on to Cultural Foundation Abu Dhabi for performances on 7-9 November.

SUMMARY:Ardal O’Hanlon: The Showing Off Must Go On
DESCRIPTION:Ardal O’Hanlon\, whose CV includes such notable hits as Father Ted and Death in Paradise as well as more recent stints on Taskmaster and Would I Lie to You\, has been touring this widely acclaimed (and very silly) show around the world. It’s all about making sense of the world when his background dictates that there is nothing worse than showing off – and yet he shows off as a way of life. \nIn an age of raging populism\, angry identity politics\, the end of truth\, the collapsing middle ground\, and peak avocado\, Ardal\, an otherwise gentle voice of reason\, is forced to re-join the fray. Terrified of being on the wrong side of history and keen to prove his age\, race\, gender\, and class don’t necessarily define him as a person\, he turns to comedy\, the best\, most therapeutic emergency response to extreme events …

SUMMARY:Aurie Styla: The Aurator Tour
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning comedian\, actor and writer from London with a load of style\, a Spirit of the (Edinburgh) Fringe Award for 2022\, a distinctive voice (he’s the worldwide voice of Pintrest\, among others)\, and a neat line in wit for tech and gaming among his interests. One to watch.\n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Shane Todd: MUMMY
DESCRIPTION:The reliably funny Northern Irish comic is currently touring his new standup show – from here he zips over to Australia and New Zealand\, then to mainland Europe for a few more dates\, all before the end of March … He’s arguably the funniest man in Belfast and probably hasn’t had the exposure he deserves. Well worth catching (especially if he resurrects his Stormont election candidates\, the smarmy Mike McGoldrick and the uber-creepy Alistair Maxwell). \n

SUMMARY:Masood Boomgaard: Self-Help Singh
DESCRIPTION:The rather good South African / Indian comedian is back in Dubai with his alter ego\, Self-Help Singh\, alternative life coach and de-motivational speaker (who apparently “first appeared to Boomgaard in a vision after he fell and hit his head while rushing to the bathroom in an attempt to outrun the gastric consequences of bad lamb vindaloo”).

SUMMARY:Darren Simpson
DESCRIPTION:Following sold-out shows in New York\, London and his native South Africa\, Darren “Whackhead” Simpson returns to Dubai with his standup show – but expect a few of the phone pranks for which he’s well known.

SUMMARY:Jason Leong: Brain Drain
DESCRIPTION:The Malaysian doctor-turned-comedian is in town with his Brain Drain world tour. Expect quick wit and and great comic timing; his recently released second Netflix special\, Ride With Caution\, suggests that he is destined for greatness (he’s keen to become Malaysia’s first uncircumcised prime minister\, so that might actually happen).

SUMMARY:Rosie Holt: The Woman’s Hour
DESCRIPTION:This should be interesting. Rosie Holt is a actress and writer who’s best known as a satirist with a massive Twitter presence for her roles as a parody Johnson-worshipping MP (surely not modelled on Nadine Dorries?). This show includes a couple of versions of that characters\, along with several other caricatures of burbling backbenchers\, a woke-bashing TV host and a posh lefty whose social-justice standards are immeasurably higher than anyone else’s. It’s all crisply observed and delivered with impeccable timing\, although Holt came to prominence as one of a clutch of good lockdown comics in short social media performances\, this show proves she can make the transition to a bigger stage and a longer format. \nStill\, she works particularly well in smallish comedy venues; the QE2 venue is just about the right size and its plush stylings might suit her biting wit\, but its usual Dubai audience might not be best fit for her brand of topical\, political and UK-centric humour. That said\, she is very sharp and well worth seeing … Recommended.
