SUMMARY:Rana Begum: Taking Form
DESCRIPTION:Rana Begum brings her textile works to The Third Line for the first time. Her fifth solo exhibition at the gallery features a new body of large-scale wool tapestries presented alongside works on linen\, paper and MDF\, all reflecting the artist’s longstanding engagement with abstraction and minimalism and continuing her exploration of light through new materials and forms. Her characteristic engagement with geometry runs throughout\, with forms suggesting patterns that extend beyond their physical boundaries. \nSuspended from the ceiling in Gallery 1\, Begum’s nearly 5m-tall tapestries should transform the space into a vast\, immersive field of cascading colour. The tapestries are feature coloured triangles\, woven together using the ridging technique that results in a dual pattern revealed only as the viewer moves around them. \nGallery 2 will have a series of large-scale linen paintings. The natural\, unprocessed tone and texture of the linen influence the colour as it is absorbed into the weave\, creating a sense of rawness and an organic quality across the surface.
