SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Whispers of the Past
DESCRIPTION:This Aisha Alabbar Gallery exhibition in collaboration with Sotheby’s Middle East features five artists whose works explore the quiet persistence of memory and cultural inheritance – Najat Makki\, Khalid Al Banna\, Sara Al Haddad\, Sara Aref Ahli\, and Samar Hejazi. Says the gallery: “each artist approaches the idea of the ‘past’ through a distinct visual language whether through the tactile layers of textile\, the fragility of glass\, or the expressive gesture of abstract form. Together\, their works trace the emotional contours of personal and collective histories. Material becomes memory; thread\, light\, and pigment act as conduits for reflection …”

SUMMARY:Whispers of the Past
DESCRIPTION:A group show by Aisha Alabbar Gallery in collaboration with Sotheby’s Middle East at Sotheby’s gallery space in DIFC. It featyures five influential rgeional artists – Najat Makki\, Khalid Al Banna\, Sara Al Haddad\, Sara Aref Ahli\, and Samar Hejazi – each of whom draws from personal narratives\, regional histories\, and cultural heritage to create works that engage with questions of memory\, identity\, and inheritance\, offering nuanced reflections on how the past shapes both individual and collective experience. \nSays the gallery: “At the heart of the exhibition lies an invitation to listen closely to the stories etched in surfaces\, suspended in space\, or woven through patterns and repetition. ‘Whispers of the Past’ does not speak loudly; instead\, it draws viewers into a contemplative space\, where quiet gestures reveal enduring legacies”. \nThe opening programme includes Brushes Between Us: Art and Legacy\, a brunch talk to open the exhibition at 11.30am on 11 September. Munira Al Sayegh moderates a panel that includes artists Najat Makki\, Khaled Al Banna\, and Sara Al Haddad. RSVP here for an invite. \nTo 14 November. \nAbove: Sara Al Haddad\, Remembering(s) (2018)

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Hot Spots
DESCRIPTION:The second in The Gallery Collective\, a series of sort-of gallery takeovers whereby Sotheby’s Dubai is giving its DIFC exhibition space over to a series of local galleries in a two-year run starting in November. Every six to eight weeks\, a partner gallery will curate a show in the space; this time it’s Tabari Artspace and Third Line. Showcasing a range of artists from across the Middle East and North Africa\, the title draws inspiration from the language and codes of advertising\, particularly the vocabulary used in travel marketing; “by adopting this commercial vernacular\, the exhibition brings forward deeper themes of human movement\, cultural attachment\, and globalisation”.

SUMMARY:A Love Letter to Beirut
DESCRIPTION:Sotheby’s has an upcoming London auction devoted to artists from or inspired by Lebanon’s capital\, and Dubai is getting a preview in the form of a selection of the works that will be in the sale. The full complement includes work from nearly 50 artists; around 30 of them are actually Lebanese\, the others are from Iraq\, Egypt\, Syria and Palestine. We don’tknow exactly how many or who will be shown at Sotheby’s Dubai\, but we’re told the highlights of the auction include paintings\, watercolours\, mixed-media and sculptures by the likes of Etel Adnan\, Huguette Caland\, Ayman Baalbaki\, Mona Saudi\, Aref El Rayess and Saloua Raouda Choucair. \nFollow the abbreviated Dubai show (26 February to 1 March) the exhibition moves to New Bond Street from 19-22 April in advance of the sale on 23 April. \nAlso on exhibition at the same are a couple of pieces from Sotheby’s bi-annual Modern & Contemporary Middle East auction (London\, 23 April)\, notably two rare paintings by Bahman Mohasses from 1964. \nAbove: Mahmoud Saïd\, Maisons à Aïtanit (1951).
