SUMMARY:March Meeting 2024
DESCRIPTION:Sharjah Art Foundation’s annual convening of artists\, curators\, scholars and arts practitioners from around the world to discuss issues in contemporary art focuses this time on collectives whose practice intertwines artmaking and community building in various forms of collaboration that advance social justice. \nThrough talks\, roundtable discussions\, lectures\, workshops\, performances and more\, MM 2024 invites participants to radically reimagine more inclusive\, equitable\, sustainable and liveable futures. It will examine collaborative methods and modalities that both reappraise artistic\, curatorial and activist approaches and reconfigure the role of art and artists in our current lived realities. It also considers alternative forms of coming together\, such as learning platforms\, activist movements\, correspondences or publishing\, which can serve as toolkits for social justice\, solidarity and political mobilisation. \n

SUMMARY:Mohit Takalkar: Hunkaro
DESCRIPTION:In modern society\, where listening to others is often replaced with the consumption of visual media\, Hunkaro – meaning ‘verbal affirmation’ in Marathi – is an important counterweight. This performance piece\, co-presented by Ishara Art Foundation\, invites the audience to practise the precious gift of attention through active\, participatory listening. \nIt interweaves three stories of human trials and tribulations\, tied together by the vital importance of hope and the impossibility of life without it. Using traditional singing and vocal techniques\, the stories are narrated in different styles\, languages and dialects by six professional actors. In the absence of musical instruments\, the performers emphasise the aesthetic value of language and the importance of the spoken word. \nThere is a second performance on 18 February. \nThis is part of the second season of Perform Sharjah\, Sharjah Art Foundation’s performance programme that invites you “to encounter new experiences while exploring the heritage houses and art spaces of the city”. Perform Sharjah is curated by Sharjah Art Foundation’s Director of Performance and Senior Curator Tarek Abou El Fetouh. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Emmie McLuskey: Creative Practices and Curation in Sound Art
DESCRIPTION:Glasgow-based Emmie McLuskey works with sculpture\, print\, sound and performance to explore the physical embodiment of communication with a particular focus on systems of learning. McLuskey works across the roles of artist\, programmer\, writer and educator. She sees these as completely interlinked and inseparable from each other\, these multiple expressions\, regardless of form\, all come from a desire to communicate and process the nuance and complexity of our world alongside others. Collaboration is central to her work\, starting with a shared question or observation that she explores more deeply through practice; this has previously taken the form of publications\, events\, objects\, conversations and exhibitions; recent works have centred around interactions in and between bodies\, considering the systems that control and record them. This Sharjah Art Foundation talk outlines her approach and practice.
