SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Antonio Dias: The Search for an Open Enigma
DESCRIPTION:Work by Antonio Dias (1944–2018)\, an artist who relentlessly transgressed material and conceptual boundaries\, tackling complex sociopolitical issues across diverse mediums. Drawing upon Hélio Oiticica’s 1969 analysis of Dias’ practice\, the title embraces the versatile\, ever-changing and subversive nature of his artistic oeuvre; the exhibition pays homage to Dias’ category-defying tendencies through a broad selection of works that encompass his artistic trajectory from its beginnings in the 1960s until the early 2000s.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE William Kentridge: A Shadow of a Shadow
DESCRIPTION:A master draughtsman\, illustrator\, filmmaker and sculptor\, William Kentridge is also a prolific theatre-maker who has collaborated with local theatre groups and world-renowned opera houses. This is the first exhibition to focus solely on Kentridge’s theatre practice and surveys 23 performances created by Kentridge from the late 1980s to the present. Presenting drawings\, puppets\, props\, costumes\, animations and stage backdrops\, the exhibition explores how Kentridge’s artistic practice revolves around different theatrical projects that consistently critique the different manifestations of authoritarianism through time.

SUMMARY:William Kentridge: A Shadow of a Shadow
DESCRIPTION:Kentridge’s first major solo exhibition in the region features a survey of 17 performances by the artist\, spanning a period from the late 1980s to the present and showcasing a wide range of his work. They include his interpretations of King Ubu from Ubu Roi and Mozart’s The Magic Flute alongside Kentridge’s original production The Head and the Load (2018) about Africa and Africans during World War I. On display will be a variety of objects and artworks produced for the development and presentation of Kentridge’s performance projects\, including drawings\, stage backdrops\, animations\, puppets\, props\, costumes and installations inspired by theatrical illusions. \nWhile nodding to Kentridge’s predilection for shadow plays and puppet theatre\, A Shadow of a Shadow also pays homage to his incisive political rebuke of authoritarianism through absurdist satire and theatricality. Together\, the works selected for this exhibition speak to the artist’s ongoing critique of social constructs\, power structures and colonialism. \nThis exhibition is curated by Hoor Al Qasimi\, Director of Sharjah Art Foundation\, and Tarek Abou El Fetouh\, Senior Curator and Director of the Performance Department\, with May Alqaydi\, Assistant Curator\, and Khalid Mohammed\, Curatorial Assistant\, Sharjah Art Foundation. \nTo 8 December. \nAbove: William Kentridge\, Cat / Coffee Pot IV (2019)

SUMMARY:Perhaps Here
DESCRIPTION:Borrowing its title from Khulood Al Mualla’s fourth book of poetry Rubbama Huna\, Perhaps Here explores the orbits of contemporary imagination through a variety of live performances. This event will feature artists from diverse disciplines who will share their works with the public\, inviting audiences to experience something that could either be intellectual\, emotional or aesthetic in nature. \nOver three days\, 16 theatre makers\, contemporary dancers\, and installation and video artists as well as poets and writers will be performing their works simultaneously on repeat throughout the evening in a marathon of artistic productions. Audience members can select between four and six short shows\, each 10-20 minutes long\, to attend on the night; there are performances on 9\, 10 and 11 February at 8.30pm each evening. \nIn conjunction with the performances\, Perform Sharjah will offer a wide range of learning opportunities in theatre and performance through workshops and talks led by participating artists with local partners and cultural practitioners. \nThis is the last event in the second season of Perform Sharjah\, Sharjah Art Foundation’s performance programme that invites you “to encounter new experiences while exploring the heritage houses and art spaces of the city”. Perform Sharjah\, which ran from October 2023 to February 2024\, is curated by Sharjah Art Foundation’s Director of Performance and Senior Curator Tarek Abou El Fetouh.

SUMMARY:Berlin: Perhaps All the Dragon
DESCRIPTION:An interesting take on the ‘six degrees of separation’ theory – the idea that all people are no more than six social connections away from each other. In an intimate setting\, spectators are seated at a large oval table\, each facing a single screen. Seemingly ordinary people appear on their screens\, each narrating an unusual but true story in a filmed monologue – a philosophic proposition\, a scientific detail or an anecdote. The themes brought up in these stories are eclectic; together\, they balance on the edge of believability. \nThere are performances at 8.30pm on these dates: \n\n13 Jan (English)\n14 Jan (English)\n19 Jan (Arabic)\n20 Jan (English)\n21 Jan Jan (English)\n26 Jan (Arabic)\n27 Jan (English)\n28 Jan (English)\n2 Feb (Arabic)\n3 Feb (English)\n4 Feb (English)\n\nThis is part of the second season of Perform Sharjah\, Sharjah Art Foundation’s performance programme that invites you “to encounter new experiences while exploring the heritage houses and art spaces of the city”. Perform Sharjah\, which runs from October 2023 to February 2024\, is curated by Sharjah Art Foundation’s Director of Performance and Senior Curator Tarek Abou El Fetouh.
