SUMMARY:Compagnie Nacera Belaza: La Nuée
DESCRIPTION:The title of this dance piece by Nacera Belaza holds two meanings in French: a dark cloud and a dense flock of birds. She developed the performance following a research visit to the First Nation Dakota tribes in North America; she was struck by the communal festive rituals\, where participants from different communities danced individually and collectively to an ascending rhythm. For La Nuée\, ten dancers move in a pitch-dark space in a performance that unfolds like a painting being drawn on a black canvas; the successive moving tableaux become visible under very precise jets of light that appear and disappear in tandem with the rhythm of a distinctive and singular soundtrack. \nThis performance is La Nuée‘s Arab world premiere; Belaza has seven professional dancers from her own company plus three SPAA students for this special version of the piece\, which is part of Sharjah Art Foundation’s Perform Sharjah programme.

SUMMARY:Gallant Indies | Les Indes galantes: dir Philippe Béziat (2021)
DESCRIPTION:On the stage of the Opéra Bastille in Paris\, 30 dancers from non-traditional genres – hip-hop\, krump\, break\, voguing – reprise and remix Jean-Philippe Rameau’s baroque 1735 masterpiece\, Les Indes galantes. It’s an opera offensive to modern sensibilities that reflected French colonial expansion and represented the myth of the noble savage; this documentary follows the cast over the course of a year as they take the idea from concept to stage\, culminating in a performance run at the Opéra Bastille. The modern mix of urban dance and opera singing represents both a human adventure and a meeting of political realities: so can a new generation of artists storm the Bastille today? Screens in the MOVE ON FILM season.

SUMMARY:Dancing Pina: dir Florian Heinzen-Ziob (2022)
DESCRIPTION:Two spectacular dance projects show how a young generation of dancers from all over the world are rediscovering Pina Bausch’s choreography: the Semperoper Ballet Company in Dresden rehearses her dance opera Iphigenia in Tauris\, and dancers from all over Africa rehearse Bausch’s ballet Le Sacre du Printemps at the École des Sables in Senegal. Dancers from traditions street dance\, classical ballet\, traditional and modern African dance transform Pina Bausch’s work – and Pina’s choreography transforms the dancers. A visually intense and emotionally charged journey into the world of modern dance and beyond. \nThe screening\, in the MOVE ON FILM season\, is followed by a talk and Q&A with Jean Laurent Sasportes (a principal dancer with the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch from 1979 to 1997 who has continued to be involved with the Pina Bausch repertoire).

SUMMARY:Mute
DESCRIPTION:This experimental theatre piece by the Kuwaiti director and playwright Sulayman Al Bassam examines that brief moment of silence that followed the Beirut port explosion of 2020. Produced with actress Hala Omran and the band Two or The Dragon\, the performance blends music and singing with prose and audiovisual elements. A wide departure from the norms of Arab theatre\, the play’s structure is likened by Abou El Fetouh to that of a poem. \nMute has won awards at the Carthage Theatre Festival and the Cairo International Experimental Theatre Festival. Part of Sharjah Art Foundation’s Perform Sharjah programme\, Mute is co-presented by the Sharjah Performing Arts Academy.

SUMMARY:Tao Ye: 4
DESCRIPTION:Tao Ye’s choreographic works explore the potential of the human body beyond the limitations of representation or dramaturgical narrative.  In this performance piece\, the choreography is abstract – four fluid bodies flow in powerfully controlled movements around a magnetic central point\, relentlessly performing a fixed pattern of movements as if seeking to achieve oneness. The central point keeps them together\, but they cannot breach the distance between them. Minimal shifts in movement are masterfully built in throughout the performance\, drawing the audience into a slowly growing trance. \nPostponed from its original 7 January date in solidarity with the situation in Gaza\, this is part of the second season of Perform Sharjah\, Sharjah Art Foundation’s performance programme that invites you “to encounter new experiences while exploring the heritage houses and art spaces of the city”. Perform Sharjah\, which runs from October to February\, is curated by Sharjah Art Foundation’s Director of Performance and Senior Curator Tarek Abou El Fetouh. \n

SUMMARY:Urinetown
DESCRIPTION:Final performance for this satirical musical by SPAA students; the story is set in a dystopian future\, where a chronic water shortage means that public loos have been extravagantly privatised. The plot hinges on a rebellion led by a cleaner who takes hostage the daughter of the convenience business’s Mr Big to spark a rebellion. The original had an engaging self-referential tone that parodies the genre (“dreams only come true in happy musicals” says one of the characters).

SUMMARY:Urinetown
DESCRIPTION:You can’t deny the ambition of the Musical Theatre and Production Arts students of Sharjah Performing Arts Academy – they’re doing the Tony award winner Urinetown\, a satirical musical that attacks corporate greed\, rampant exploitation and unsustainable lifestyles. There’s a palpable debt to Brecht and Weill in the book by Greg Kotis and Mark Hollmann’s score; the story is set in a dystopian future\, where a chronic water shortage means that public loos have been extravagantly privatised. The plot hinges on a rebellion led by a cleaner who takes hostage the daughter of the convenience business’s Mr Big to spark a rebellion. The original had an engaging self-referential tone that parodies the genre (“dreams only come true in happy musicals” says one of the characters). \nSPAA Marketing and Communications Manager Shiv Gnanam is promising a show “where the boundaries of musical theatre are pushed and laughter knows no bounds”. It’s directed by Paul Spicer\, Programme Leader for Musical Theatre at SPAA. \nThere are further performances at 7.30pm on 20 and 21 June.
