SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Abdulqader Al Rais: Al Nayed
DESCRIPTION:A retrospective for one of the artists who have played a central role in shaping the UAE’s modern visual identity\, featuring work from a career spanning more than five decades. Bridging heritage and modernity with authority\, Al Rais’s paintings draw deeply on Emirati heritage\, Islamic culture\, and the interplay between the UAE’s natural landscapes and architecture. As the gallery puts it\, “Al Nayed captures the cultural transformation of the UAE without nostalgia”. \nThe exhibition include rare works from the artist’s private collection and a selection of previously unseen new work\, but also draws substantially from five of the artist’s best known series – Alghaf\, inspired by the ghaf tree\, a national symbol of the UAE; Calligraphy (Hurufiyya)\, where Arabic letters function as visual and spiritual forms; Impressionism\, early depictions of UAE landscapes rendered with soft\, atmospheric brushstrokes; Alhaa\, a distinctive series of watercolours on paper; and Abstract\, which combines geometric elements with landscape compositions. \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Thomas Dillon: The Raw and the Cooked
DESCRIPTION:This is Dillon’s first solo exhibition in Dubai; and it is claimed to be a milestone in the artist’s career\, featuring a body of work conceived and created specifically for this show. \nIn Claude Lévi-Strauss’s influential text of the same name\, the author identified binary oppositions – nature and culture\, raw and cooked – as fundamental tools by which societies organise meaning. For Dillon\, it is more than a reference; it offers a conceptual lens through which his paintings may be read – Dillon feels he is testing the limits of painting as a medium that can bridge instinct and intellect\, gesture and structure\, matter and form. As the gallery puts it\, “Dillon’s works remind us that art continues to operate like myth: as a space where chaos is given form\, where the elemental becomes symbolic\, and where human thought – raw and cooked alike – finds its most resonant expression”.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Calder / Hiquily: Balancing Act
DESCRIPTION:A clever juxtaposition of works by two masters of the poetry of balance and movement that reveals unexpected harmonies between the artistic languages of Alexander Calder and Philippe Hiquily. Calder’s gouaches on paper\, with their bold colours and rhythmic compositions\, provide a visual counterpoint to Hiquily’s sculptural explorations of balance\, weightlessness\, and abstraction. These works\, essential to Calder’s creative process\, exhibit the same principles that animate his mobiles\, two of which are included in this exhibition – New Old Universe (1953)\, an elegant example of his ‘constellations’\, and Caged Stone on Yellow Stalk (1966)\, a rare standing mobile. With these works are four of Hiquily’s Girouette mobiles\, each representing a different season.

SUMMARY:Pieter Obels and Hermann Nitsch: Momentous Convergence
DESCRIPTION:You wouldn’t normally put these two artists together; but the gallery describes this show as “a platform that showcases a compelling dialogue between their distinct artistic visions”\, one that “celebrates abstract and profound concepts while highlighting the intriguing harmony between the artists despite their distinct stylistic approaches”. \nPieter Obels (b.1968) transforms steel into sculptures that defy its inherent rigidity\, creating light\, graceful pieces with organic shapes. Here he presents a collection inspired by the beauty of Dubai. “When you look at my sculptures you start to follow the lines; ‘Where do I begin and where do I go.’ It’s like travelling\, finding new roads\, walking unknown paths. For me\, showing my sculptures in Dubai feels the same. A new place to explore and meet. It’s a great adventure that starts in my studio and brings me new unknown encounters. I follow.” \nThe art of Hermann Nitsch (1938-2022)\, rooted in Expressionism and religious symbolism\, aims to be more intense and provocative. His art\, especially through the Theatre of Orgies and Mysteries series\, aimed to engage all senses\, often incorporating intense and provocative elements such as flesh and blood to explore themes of tragedy and passion. \nTo 15 March. \nAbove: (left) Pieter Obels\, No One Else in Mind (2023) – (right) Hermann Nitsch\, KK_15_13 (2013) \n
