SUMMARY:Dina El Wedidi | Samora Pinderhughes
DESCRIPTION:The rich melodic culture of Egyptian music from Dina El Wedidi is set alongside the harmonically sophisticated sounds of American jazz mixed with RnB and post-rock by Samora Pinderhughes. It’s an intimate\, cross-boundary double bill\, the first of two this weekend that\, as The Arts Center’s Executive Artistic Director Bill Bragin put it\, “continues The Arts Center’s tradition of highlighting visionary artists whose work defies easy categorisation”. \nEl Wedidi last performed at The Arts Center in its inaugural 2015-2016 season as part of the Nile Project. Her innovative approach has earned her a significant reputation on the regional and global stage; her music is influenced by Egyptian folk music and Arab poetry\, resonating with the beauty of cultural diversity. The show features a selection of songs from her previous albums and new singles\, presenting her as both a singer and music composer and showcasing different chapters in her remarkable career. \nSamora Pinderhughes is a pianist\, vocalist\, and composer who commits himself to making art in his everyday life. Through honest lyrics and harmonic language\, his work delves into the things society tries to hide – its history\, its structures\, the individual\, and the daily things we all experience but don’t know how to talk about. With a musical style that cuts across multiple genres\, his performance is an invitation for the audience to express themselves and their inner thoughts by feeling things deeply and focusing on how we all live. \nThere will be a night souk as well\, with 40 retail vendors offering locally made artisan products\, including handmade soaps\, candles\, local artwork\, jewellery\, home décor\, and pottery. And if you want to take the second concert in this weekend series as well\, there’s a two-day pass available at AED 155. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Yamen Saadi
DESCRIPTION:The young Palestinian violinist was appointed concertmaster of the Vienna State Opera Orchestra in 2022 (he was previously concertmaster with the Daniel Barenboim’s West-Eastern Divan Orchestra) but he maintains a busy career as both a soloist and chamber musician. His playing is characterised by lyricism\, virtuosity and elegance – “the blend of virtuosity\, lyricism and controlled expressivity is perfect\,” says one reviewer – so this Abu Dhabi Festival recital (with Julien Quentin\, piano) should be well worth the entrance fee. \nProgramme: \nPoulenc Sonata for Violin and Piano \nBrahms Violin Sonata No.2 in A Major\, Op.100 ‘Thun’ \nStrauss Violin Sonata in E Flat Major\, Op.18

SUMMARY:Aakash Odedra & Aditi Mangaldas: Mehek
DESCRIPTION:The second and final performance of the world premiere of a new dance piece\, devised and performed by two of the pre-eminent South Asian dancers of their time – Aakash Odedra\, well known to Abu Dhabi audiences from previous visits; and Aditi Mangaldas\, a dancer and choreographer long recognised both for her skill and for bringing a contemporary evolution to Kathak dance. \nDerived from the Hindi word for fragrance\, the title Mehek alludes to the enduring power of memory and the essence of love itself. Aditi Mangaldas\, dancing the first ever duet of her 50-year career\, and Aakash Odedra weave a narrative that celebrates love in all its forms: raw\, authentic\, and infinitely resonant. \nThe Arts Center will also be hosting a dance workshop with Aakash Odedra on 9 February at 6.30pm; request an invitation here. \nMehek is created by Aakash Odedra Company and Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company / The Drishtikon Dance Foundation\, and is presented with the support of Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels. It was co-commissioned by The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi Sadler’s Wells; The Lowry\, Salford; Birmingham Hippodrome; and the Bagri Foundation. \nmagpie interviewed Aakash Odedra in advance of the performance; read the feature here. \n  \n  \n

Aditi Mangaldas\, dancing the first ever duet of her 50-year career\, and Aakash Odedra weave a narrative that celebrates love in all its forms: raw\, authentic\, and infinitely resonant. \nMehek is described as “an enchanting exploration of the human heart\, its desires\, courage\, and resilience\, masterfully brought to life”; the piece gives a voice to a story that is often regarded as contentious\, love between a mature woman and a younger man. The stage transforms into a canvas where rhythmic tales of desire unfold\, entwined with the elements of nature; the use of mirrors in the set literally reflects the duality of a tranquil surface above and the tumultuous waves beneath. \nMehek is at The Arts Center for two performances\, with a second show on 8 February. SUMMARY:Miwa Matreyek: This World Made Itself / I Infinitely Yours
DESCRIPTION:The final two performances of these two works featuring Miwa Matreyek’s signature projected animations and shadow silhouettes\, both combining surreal and poetic narratives to depict the conflict between humans and nature. Matreyek is an animator\, designer\, and performer who creates live\, staged performances where she interacts with her animations as a shadow silhouette; her work exists in a dreamlike visual space that makes invisible worlds visible\, often weaving surreal and poetic narratives of conflict between man and nature\, and that’s the essence of these two works. \n\nInfinitely Yours (premiered 2020) is an emotional\, dream-like meditation on climate catastrophe and the Anthropocene. It merges live performance\, sculpture\, and animation\, with Miwa’s silhouette shape-shifting to experience the world from various perspectives\, an illustration of the news headlines we see every day and the complex harm humanity causes to the world. The music for Infinitely Yours was composed\, recorded and performed by Morgan Sorne.\nThis World Made Itself (2013) is another multimedia live performance work combining projected animation and the artist’s own shadow silhouette\, this time for a visually and musically rich journey through a history of the earth. Music by Flying Lotus\, Careful (aka Eric Lindley)\, and Mileece\n\nThere are performances at 2pm and 7.30pm.

SUMMARY:Dana Gingras and Animals of Distinction: FRONTERA
DESCRIPTION:A second performance for this visually stunning spectacle of propulsive dance\, dazzling lighting\, and powerful live music from the Canadian experimental post rock band Fly Pan Am. Choreographer Dana Gingras and her Montreal-based dance company Animals of Distinction explore spaces of inclusion and exclusion\, tackling borders as boundaries between the public and private realms; “borders are boundaries\, but they’re also processes\, liminal spaces where despair\, desire and neoliberal economic imperatives meet the obscure(d) operations of power”.  Another example of The Arts Center’s useful partnership with Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels.

SUMMARY:Koyaanisqatsi Live
DESCRIPTION:Godfrey Reggio’s groundbreaking 1982 film Koyaanisqatsi set to an influential score by Philip Glass (his first major film success) and performed live by the Philip Glass Ensemble. Taking its title from a Hopi word meaning “life out of balance\,” Koyaanisqatsi is a hypnotic exploration of nature and urbanisation; the footage of natural landscapes and elemental forces paints an apocalyptic vision of the collision of two worlds. The visual tone poem contains neither dialogue nor a conventional plot\, its tone being set by the juxtaposition of images and music. The stunning visuals and an impressive score from Philip Glass make this a must-see – especially with the music played live.

SUMMARY:Bebel Gilberto: Songs My Father Loved
DESCRIPTION:The Brazilian chanteuse presents a musical love letter to her father João Gilberto\, one of the originators of bossa nova\, featuring a deeply personal collection of songs he made famous. With her rich\, smoky voice\, Bebel has developed a distinctive style of her own that infuses electronica and global influence with the characteristic Brazilian rhythms; watch out for É Preciso Perdoar\, described by Bebel as “maybe my favourite song ever”.

DESCRIPTION:Fever brings its candlelight classical music recitals to Abu Dhabi for the first time – “a series of classical music concerts aimed at democratising access to classical music by allowing people all over the world to enjoy live candlelit music performances … by creating intimate experiences where fans can connect directly with their favourite artists”. In this case it’s Chopin that gets the treatment\, with Aldo Dotto on piano and a programme that does indeed look inviting (though ‘best of’ does set the bar rather high): \n\nNocturnes op.9 n.2\nNocturne in C sharp minor\nPolonaise op.44\nPrelude op.28 n.4\nPrelude op.28 n.15 ‘Raindrop’\nFantaisie-Impromptu op.66\nValse op.64 n.2\nValse op.69 n.1\nScherzo n.2 op.31\n\nThere are performances at 5pm and 7pm too\, but they were sold out when we checked (there may of course be returns).

SUMMARY:Monty Python's Spamalot
DESCRIPTION:The final two performances (thyere are shows at 2pm and 7.30pm) for this irreverent musical parody of Arthurian legend\, based on the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. It’s funny and clever\, and it’s brought to us by the Abu Dhabi Choral Group\, the UAE’s longest established amateur music group – now in its 45th season\, and with more than 75 shows in its back catalogue. Recommended.
