SUMMARY:Aseel AlYaqoub: three films
DESCRIPTION:A screening of three films by Aseel AlYaqoub\, currently featuring in the NYUAD Art Gallery’s important Between the Tides: A Gulf Quinquennial exhibition (due to close on 20 April and well work seeing – again\, if you’ve already been). \nThrough archival excavation and performative reenactment\, AlYaqoub explores the entanglements of militarism\, memory\, and inherited state rituals in postcolonial Kuwait. Drawing from found footage\, oral accounts\, and domestic gestures\, the selected films – When The Lyrebird Calls (2022)\, A Hundred Soldiers Somersaulting (2020)\, and Semiotics of War in the Kitchen (2017)  – trace the evolving iconography of war and resistance\, from colonial influence to familial memory. Together\, they question the reliability of inherited symbols and the quiet absurdities embedded in national myth-making. \nThe screening will be followed by a moderated discussion with the artist.

SUMMARY:Kodo
DESCRIPTION:In Japanese\, the word ‘kodo’ can have two meanings – it can be translated as ‘heartbeat’\, the primal source of all rhythm\, and in a different context it can mean ‘children of the drum’\, which reflects the group’s desire to play the drums with the simple heart of a child. And there’s nothing quite like a Kodo performance – the Japanese drumming is visceral in its power and hypnotic in its effects. The troupe of highly skilled drummers delivers a thrilling theatrical experience; since the group’s debut in 1981\, Kodo has given over 7\,000 performances on five continents. \nThis Abu Dhabi festival concert is sure to be a hot ticket. There’s a second performance tomorrow (9 April). \nFun fact: The largest of the taiko drums that the Kodo troupe play can weigh up to three tonnes and are made from the trunk of a single tree. \n

SUMMARY:Seeking Haven for Mr Rambo: dir Khaled Mansour (2024)
DESCRIPTION:Tensions boil over when 30-year-old Cairo security guard Hassan (Essam Omar) gets into an argument with his bullish landlord Karem (Ahmed Bahaa)\, Hassan’s beloved dog Rambo steps up to defend his master via a bite to Karem’s privates. Vengeance beckons; Hassan embarks on an urgent mission to find a safe place for his canine companion\, and in the process rediscovers self-respect. \nThe feature debut from Khaled Mansour brings a distinctively gritty flavour to its vision of lives on the fringes of working class Cairo and announces Mansour as a notable talent in Egyptian independent filmmaking; the film\, which premiered in Venice’s Horizons Extra strand\, screens in the CinemaNA series and is presented by the NYUAD Film and New Media Program. \nIn Arabic with English subtitles.

SUMMARY:Mary Gatchell
DESCRIPTION:Accolades like “accomplished singer/songwriter” and “talented musician” are bandied about all too easily; Mary Gatchell really does seem to deserve them. Here’s a partial CV: A graduate of NYU with a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Theory and Composition and a Master of Music degree in Instrumental Performance in Jazz Piano\, she has performed in small clubs and large stadiums\, in solo shows and with the groups that she’s in – like NYC’s premiere a cappella choir\, Ghostlight Chorus\, and the New Orleans southern funk bank Strangeland. \nShe’s a member of the Leon Lacey Orchestra of which she has been principal oboist; she’s also played principal oboe with the New York Chamber Players. Mary was the co-founder and artistic director of the Italian chamber music festival Siena Summer Music\, held from 2008 to 2016\,;and in 2023 her classical composition Paradiso Canto 33\, setting Dante’s text to music for a cappella choir\, was premiered in Siena. \nMary is a choreographer and musical director as well (for productions of West Side Story\, The Wiz\, Jesus Christ Superstar\, and Dreamgirls among others). She is currently a rehearsal pianist and substitute conductor for the Broadway hit\, Six The Musical. \nShe’s a music teacher too; she’s a visiting lecturer at NYU\, she has implemented a sustainable music curriculum for HIV-infected and impoverished children in Ethiopia\, and she has taught music to orphans with special needs in Bulgaria. \nAnd she’s a recording artist\, of course\, with seven albums of her original music plus three albums of hymns and spirituals\, a Christmas album\, and an album of jazz standards. \nMary’s imminent 13th album\, What’s My Name? Destiny\, sets music to a collection of love poems from such as Rabia of Basra\, Rumi\, Hafiz\, St Catherine of Siena\, and Farouk Henry. It’s this music that she will be performing at NYUAD. Especially given that tickets are complimentary\, this is a concert not to be missed …

SUMMARY:Korea National Contemporary Dance Company: Jungle
DESCRIPTION:Our everyday lives are sometimes like a jungle\, where everybody has to fight for survival in their own way. This work for 17 dancers of the Korea National Contemporary Dance Company interprets the jungle as a place of collisions between instinct and vitality of the body; it demonstrates how making and being made\, the hidden and the revealed\, relaxation and tension can run parallel to each other. \nFor Kim Sung-yong\, the company’s director and artistic director\, choreography is a process of searching for what he wants to express in the treasury of new things. Jungle\, which has toured widely\, is based on the movement research he terms ‘Process Init’\, which he developed with a focus on “sense and reaction”; through Process Init\, dancers are expected to awaken their individual concrete senses and explore mutual responses\, creating changes and expansions of movement. \nThis performance is part of the Abu Dhabi Festival.

SUMMARY:Agraharathil Kazhuthai | Donkey in a Brahmin Village (dir John Abraham\, 1977)
DESCRIPTION:A college professor faces ridicule when he adopts a newborn donkey after its mother is killed. He leaves Madras and takes the foal to his home village\, against the norms of his community. Bad things start to happen\, and the villagers blame the donkey; they kill it\, and magically miracles beginning happening in the village. The villagers erect a shrine to the donkey\, but they get their comeuppance … Abraham’s Tamil-language satire on social norms among high-caste Brahmins was originally shunned but has since attained cult status. \nScreens with two shorts by Kim Elias Majdalani\, No Man’s Land (6 min) about a dead zone on the disputed southern borders of Lebanon\, where wildlife thrives in the absence of human settlement; and Revenge of Nature (12 min)\, how nature reclaims its territory through ecological succession after an area has been abandoned by humans. \nThis programme is the final event of the Al Sidr Environmental Film Festival\, a collaboration between NYUAD and Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi.

SUMMARY:Xue Bao | Snow Leopard (dir Pema Tseden\, China\, 2023)
DESCRIPTION:This is a story about how people and animals can finally get along. A snow leopard\, rare and globally endangered\, breaks into the pen of a herder family and kills nine goats. The father and son argue about what to do: the son wants to kill the snow leopard\, the father insists on releasing it since the animal represents the spirit of the mountains. It’s a scenario that summarises the clash between traditional values and contemporary developments in a modernising Tibet; Tseden\, who died before the film could be released\, devoted his career to illustrating the complexities of modern life in his native land\, and his final completed feature is no exception. \nScreens with Shift (dir Sherine Raffoul and Moussa Shabandar\, Lebanon\, 2024: 18 min)\, a documentary short about Chadi Saad; once an enthusiast bird hunter\, he has made a 360° turn and condemns hunting as criminal. \nThis programme is part of the Al Sidr Environmental Film Festival\, a collaboration between NYUAD and Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi

SUMMARY:The Night Visitors (dir Michael Gitlin\, 2023)
DESCRIPTION:A movie about moths; film and video artist Michael Gitlin emphasises their surreal beauty as well as their ecological relevance. He’s interested in moths as organisms\, with fascinating life histories\, staggering biodiversity\, and a functional importance as indicators of climate change and habitat degradation; but he also sees moths as aesthetic beings and as carriers of meaning. \nScreens with Sleepless Birds (dir Tom Claudon and Dana Melaver\, Germany\, 2021: 45 min)\, a film that tracks the rise of artificially-lit\, industrial greenhouses in the French province of Brittany. The film shows the environmental impact of grow lights on biodiversity\, as well as on our own rhythms and perception of time. In examining the case of agricultural light pollution\, the film raises questions about the unintended consequences of human attempts to overpower nature and control the elements. \nAlso showing: The Bee Keeper’s Journey (The Climate Tribe\, 2024: 6 min)\, a short about beekeeper and ecologist Aisha Hareb Al Dhaheri\, whose passion for beekeeping raises awareness about the local ecosystem in the UAE. \nThis programme is part of the Al Sidr Environmental Film Festival\, a collaboration between NYUAD and Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi

SUMMARY:Kes (dir Ken Loach\, 1969)
DESCRIPTION:Bullied at school and ignored and abused at home by his indifferent mother and older brother\, Billy is a 15-year-old working-class Yorkshire boy who discovers his own private means of fulfilment when he adopts a fledgling kestrel and proceeds to train it in the art of falconry. Loach’s compassionate treatment means the film is both a biting indictment of the British class system of the time but also a celebration of the power of relationships between humans and animals – and his kestrel has everything that Billy needs: freedom\, pride\, respect and independence. \nScreens with Ma Poule | My Girl (dir Caroline Ophélie\, France\, 2023: 18 min). Ever since the rooster died\, Jasper’s only surviving hen has been plagued by depression; forced to come down from the mountain where he lives far from the modern world\, the old man sets out in search of companionship for his beloved feathered friend. \nThis programme is part of the Al Sidr Environmental Film Festival\, a collaboration between NYUAD and Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi

SUMMARY:Against the Tide (dir Sarvnik Kaur\, 2023)
DESCRIPTION:Winner of the Sundance 2023 Vérité Filmmaking Prize\, this captivating documentary of class\, climate change\, and overfishing centres on the lives of two indigenous fishermen. Best friends Rakesh and Ganesh both grew up in the Koli caste\, both entered their traditional profession as fishermen\, and both are struggling to provide for their young families. They face common problems: bureaucratic rules\, plastic ocean garbage\, high-tech Chinese fishing fleets\, an overpopulation of jellyfish\, and\, most ominous of all\, fish stocks depleted due to climate change. But in some crucial ways they are completely different. Rakesh has always been poor; Ganesh could afford to go to school abroad. Rakesh uses his father’s rickety boat and navigates by the moon and the tides; Ganesh has a power boat and prefers newer\, innovative methods\, like shining LED lights into the water to lure fish at night. Tension builds between the friends; how could it not\, whenever tradition and modernity clash? \nScreens with two shorts – Co-Creating with Nature: The Art of Circular Design (The Climate Tribe\, 2024: 9 min) in which designer Reema Al Mheirii talks eloquently about her heritage and her mission to redefine waste\, a process which has led her to repurpose discarded fish scales into a regenerative biomaterial from which she makes architectural floor lamps; and Wrought\n(dir Anna Sigrithur and Joel Penner\, Canada\, 2022: 22 min)\, a time-lapse film of rotting and fermentation in action to create an intimate\, immersive world where decay can be beautiful\, tender and even surprisingly human. \nThis programme is part of the Al Sidr Environmental Film Festival\, a collaboration between NYUAD and Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi

SUMMARY:La Lezione di Teatro | The Acting Class
DESCRIPTION:This 45-minute play is a joyful lesson in theatre and a tribute to the theatrical talent of Italians for connecting to anyone\, transcending language barriers. Set partly in English and partly in Italian (and without subtitles)\, the show ironically demolishes preconceived notions of the difficulty of theatre language and highlights how communication problems can be solved with theatrical bodywork \nThe plot is simple enough\, set in the tradition of the comedy of errors: an Italian actress (Francesca Bizzarri\, who also developed the piece) receives a student (played by Goffredo Puccetti) for a private drama lesson in her apartment; he is eager to learn the tricks of the trade\, she is thrilled at the idea of making him fall in love with Italian theatre. She sits him down and searches through her library\, preparing the ideal acting class for him – from Plautus to Pirandello via Dario Fo. The lesson falters on language problems\, and communication breaks down until the universal language of commedia dell’arte comes to the rescue …

SUMMARY:Odeya Nini: ODE
DESCRIPTION:An interdisciplinary solo vocal performance by Odeya Nini on her UAE Debut. Using the body as a conduit for a flow of sound that calls out and calls upon with desire\, Odeya amplifies resonance\, pure expression\, and the dynamic dance of vocal energy; both improvised and composed\, ODE represents an invitation to join her in this sonic journey. \nOdeya Nini is a Los Angeles based interdisciplinary vocalist\, composer\, vocal embodiment coach\, and sound meditation practitioner. Her solo vocal work extends the dimension and expression of the voice and body\, creating a sonic and physical panorama of silence to noise and tenderness to grandeur. She has performed internationally and is a member of the Grammy nominated ensemble Wild Up.

SUMMARY:Claude Cozens Trio feat. Ghazi Al-Mulaifi and Tonatiut Zardoìn
DESCRIPTION:The multi-faceted jazz-fusion Claude Cozens Trio from Cape Town performs in the UAE for the first time. The trio (Cozens on drums\, Kyle Shepherd on piano and keyboards\, Benjamin Jephta on acoustic and electric bass) is joined by new friends from the UAE\, Ghazi Al-Mulaifi (guitar) and Tonatiut Zardon (trumpet). \nA multi-instrumentalist with roots in improvised music\, Cozens’ drumming owes much to the rhythms of the goema\, a type of hand drum characteristically used in South Africa’s Cape jazz scene — “Cozens uses the historic language of Cape jazz to have some very fresh conversations” as one commentator put it. \nThis is something of a reunion; the trio actually split up ten years ago to working on different projects. The members have joined forces in other formats with other artists and projects over the years but have not come together as a trio in over a decade. It’s also a reunion with NYUAD itself\, where Cozens has in the past had Adjunct Faculty status and where Ghazi Al-Mulaifi is himself a Visiting Assistant Professor. \nThe gig is sold out\, but as ever there may be returns …

SUMMARY:Dalma: dir Humaid Alsuwaidi (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Dana moves to Dalma island when she inherits a house\, renovates the property\, and starts renting it out to tourists. An innocuous lunch at the only restaurant she finds sets her on a path of collision with many of the island’s inhabitants – especially Ghaith\, a doctor who refuses to leave the island despite the many opportunities on the mainland. It’s partly about social traditions and being a woman in a man’s world\, but the tensions that emerge mean it develops into a study of interesting characters with layers of complexity that emerge as the story progresses … \nThe film\, written and directed by the UAE-based filmmaker Humaid Alsuwaidi\, was shot on location in Dalma Island over a brisk 49 days\, with a skeleton crew and a supporting cast largely made up of non-actors from the island. The screening will be followed by an in-person conversation with Alsuwaidi; it’s presented by the NYUAD Film and New Media Program in the CinemaNA series of contemporary Arab film. \n

SUMMARY:SCHLiNGEL Abu Dhabi: day three
DESCRIPTION:Last day of this weekend of films for children and the young\, presented by the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region as a taster version of the well established SCHLiNGEL International Film Festival held in Chemnitz\, Germany. The Abu Dhabi version runs over the weekend of 6-8 June. \nToday’s programme: \n9.30am – 10.30am Short film programme: Eleven wordless animated short films\, none longer than eight minutes\, including some real starlets (like Gurli Bachmann’s Spin Cycle\, above). 58 min\, suitable for age 4+ \n11.30am – 12pm A Summer of Surprises / Kannawoniwasein: dir Stefan Westerwelle (2023): Fun\, quirky\, action-packed comedy-drama road movie about friendship and adventure that brings a sad\, lonely 10-year-old boy a sense of self-confidence and belonging. 90 min\, suitable for age 10+ \n5.30pm – 7.20pm Weekend Rebels / Wochenendrebellen: dir Marc Rothemund (2023): Ten-year-old Jason is autistic and his routines are non-negotiable. His father makes a pact with him: if the boy promises to do his best at school\, they’ll choose a football club that will become his favourite. This feelgood documentary journeys through Germany as both father and son find everything they were never looking for but definitely needed … 109 min\, suitable for age 9+ \nAll screenings take place in The Arts Center’s Black Box and are free\, though pre-registration is required. The films are in German with English subtitles).

SUMMARY:Sister Act: The Musical
DESCRIPTION:Deloris Van Cartier seeks refuge in a convent after witnessing a crime\, and her vibrant personality and musical prowess injects the convent’s choir with infectious energy and harmony. It’s based of course on the Whoopi Goldberg movie of the same name\, and it looks absolutely perfect for the always excellent Abu Dhabi Choral Group. \nThe final performances are tomorrow at 2.30pm and 7.30pm.
