SUMMARY:All Manner of Experiments: Legacies of the Baghdad Modern Art Group
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Nada Shabout of NYUAD’s al Mawrid Arab Center for the Study of Art\, this exhibition investigates and celebrates the work and influence of one of the most important art movement of the mid-Century Middle East. Dr Shabout brings together work by the artists from the Baghdad Modern Art Group\, as well as those who the group influenced both at the time and in later generations. \nEstablished in 1951 by two of Iraq’s most influential artists\, Jewad Selim (1919–1961) and Shakir Hassan Al Said (1925–2004)\, the Baghdad Modern Art Group grew to engage many of Iraq’s leading artists\, architects\, poets\, and more; together\, they sought to develop a new art form that reflected the secularised\, modern society emerging from the dismantling of the Ottoman Empire. Says the gallery: “Artists questioned the ability of traditional ‘Islamic art’ practices to present their contemporary realities\, searching for a more effective visual language. In this context\, modern art provided a conduit for exploration and was perceived by Iraqi artists as a global space of shared humanity …” \nAt the same time\, those artists were conscious of their role in developing a sense of identity for their newly formed nation\, alongside broader decolonization processes. “This set the stage for Iraq’s so-called golden age of the 1950s: a time of maturation for a generation of artists pivotal in initiating rigorous standards of art theory and practice\, thus charting new possibilities for future generations.” \nArtists included in the show: Faraj Abbo\, Sadik Kwaish Alfraji\, Himat Mohammad Ali\, Rasoul Alwan\, Suad al-Attar\, Qahtan Awni\, Dia al-Azzawi\, Bogus Bablanian\, Amar Dawod\, Ghassan Ghaib\, Faiq (Faeq) Hassan\, Mohammed Ghani Hikmat\, Jabra Ibrahim Jabra\, Rand Abdul Jabbar\, Fouad Jihad\, Saadi Al Kaabi\, Ardash Kakafian\, Salma Khoury\, Hanaa Malallah\, Mahmoud Obaidi\, Widad al-Orfali\, Khalid al-Rahal\, Kareem Risan\, Miran al-Saadi\, Mahmoud Sabri\, Naziha Salim\, Nizar (Nazar) Salim\, Shakir Hassan Al Said\, Delair Shaker\, Jewad Selim\, Lorna Selim\, Walid Siti\, Ismail Fattah (Al-Turk)\, Madiha Umar\, Khalil al-Ward\, Nazar Yahya \nTo 7 June.

DESCRIPTION:This mid-career retrospective marks the first institutional survey in the region for Ala Younis. It includes archival installations\, textiles\, murals\, mosaics\, and drawings spanning the last two decades of her hybrid practice as an artist-researcher-curator. There will also be some major new works\, including a collaboration with historian Dr Masha Kirasirova supported by NYUAD’s Research Kitchens\, and new projects developed during the artist’s tenure as research scholar at NYUAD’s al Mawrid Arab Center for the Study of Art. \nInformed by her training in architecture and visual cultures\, Younis’ projects centre on the physical developments and narrative intersections of the Arab geographies in which she grew up\, frequently drawing from a wide range of formal and informal archives. Together\, these works trace conceptual and formal throughlines in her work\, from the tools and skills she developed as she emerged in the art scene of Amman to her experiments in navigating new knowledge as she evolved the unique methods and perspective for which she is noted today.

DESCRIPTION:NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery is celebrating its ten-year anniversary with a characteristically interesting exhibition. In Real Time is a dynamic show – over the course of three months the curators will be adding artists\, and the artists and performers will add work. So far the roster includes some impressive names. Gallery (and magpie) favourites Ramin Haerizadeh\, Rokni Haerizadeh and Hesam Rahmanian are joined by Chafa Ghaddar\, Rana Begum\, Haleh Redjaian\, Moza Almatrooshi\, Gözde Ilkin and Cristiana de Marchi. \nThe prime mover is of course the Gallery’s Executive Director Maya Allison\, who has a ‘letter of intent’ that asks some pertinent questions: “What do we need from a space for art in this particular moment\, in this particular part of the world\, in the UAE\, in a university\, in an academic gallery?” Her intention is that the artists\, the visitors and the art gallery team essentially devise some answers\, or at least some opinions – “I hope this exhibition allows for any number of responses” concludes Maya Allison. \nThe contribution from the artists is obvious – they can make and remake art\, amending their presence over the course of the show. Some artworks start with no more than a statement of intent; some artists may just leave hints of a presence (“the artist was here\, and may be back”). Maybe there will be some works that last only one day. And the roster may expand during the show: “the artist list will grow\, if and when it seems right”. \nMuch the same applies to the gallery team\, particularly the curators: they can add more artists\, reconfigure the space\, expound and cajole. The principal curator is Duygu Demir\, quite recently arrived but carrying an impressive pedigree (and ad addressbook that has obviously contributed some of the participating artists). She’s expects to provide curatorial interventions\, maybe even collaborations. \nAs for the visitors\, their role may be more ephemeral: “this is an exhibition about visiting and revisiting\, about being physically present in the space\, with the traces left by artists who have been there\, or hints of those who will be there …” But in fact two of the works will be made entirely by the community\, and that could mean a contribution from you. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Prior to his Arts Center show tomorrow\, the fiercely independent hip hop artist Oddisee will lead a talk in the NYUAD Gallery Reading Room that focuses on the DIY entrepreneurial approach to building his career – instead of pursuing record deals\, Oddisee has taken the less-travelled path from single-handedly writing\, recording\, producing\, and mixing his music to steering his marketing strategy and tour runs. In this presentation and audience Q&A\, Oddisee covers some of the essentials elements of this: building a brand\, identifying markets\, developing relationships with promoters\, and running a record label (he launched his own label OUTER NOTE in 2020).

She’s expects to provide curatorial interventions\, maybe even collaborations. \nAs for the visitors\, their role may be more ephemeral: “this is an exhibition about visiting and revisiting\, about being physically present in the space\, with the traces left by artists who have been there\, or hints of those who will be there …” But in fact two of the works will be made entirely by the community\, and that could mean a contribution from you. \nWe like this idea. A Berklee graduate\, she recently released her second album. \nKhalid Jauffer An alumnus of SEAF and Campus Art Dubai 7.0\, Jauffer (b. 1996\, Dubai) finds his subject matter in everyday life; “from writing poems in delivery order comments to recreating a rose in a bottle from his office parking lot\, he distils the poetic fragility of human existence from seemingly mundane experiences”. \nCarlos Páez Multidisciplinary theatre artist\, game designer\, and educator whose work focuses on “creating new realities where audience-participants explore new ways of being themselves and interacting with other humans and non-humans”. Another SEAF alumnus\, he has a BA in Theater from NYUAD with a minor in Game Design. \n

DESCRIPTION:The first in a new series presented by The NYUAD Art Gallery\, in which curators working in the UAE and beyond discuss their approaches to curatorial practice. The aim is to survey the various individual positions and institutional models at work today\, offering a public arena to discuss questions that pertain to exhibition-making\, critical thinking\, artistic collaboration\, and beyond. \nFirst up is Suheyla Takesh\, currently a fellow at the al Mawrid Arab Center for the Study of Art and chief curator at the Barjeel Art Foundation collection in Sharjah. She’ll discuss her work with the Barjeel collection as a case study to investigate the phases of a collection’s evolution: what factors influenced its transformation? And what is the role of a private art collection like the Barjeel in the UAE’s wider cultural ecosystem? \nThis talk is presented in collaboration with al Mawrid. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Blane De St Croix: Horizon
DESCRIPTION:The Art Gallery at NYUAD opens its new season with works from a sculptor who works on the relationship between people and landscape and in particular the landscape of climate change. His practice is based on extensive field research; over a series of residencies at NYUAD over the last year\, he has developed two major new bodies of work that are rooted in his study of the UAE’s specific landscapes and region – including a collaboration with Joanna Settle from the university’s the theatre department. \nWe’re expecting something special from this show. His last major exhibition\, at Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art a couple of years ago\, was titled How to move a landscape; it represented a multilayered reflection on climate change and the creeping environmental catastrophe\, how manmade physical changes to the landscape sit on aeons of geological time\, how the changes will win out whatever we do. It was a show with political comment and wit alongside the doomy inevitability; as one review put it\, “the thing about moving a landscape is you can’t”. \nThe Horizon exhibition includes the two new bodies of work along with a number of other never-before-shown works. \nTo 21 January. \n  \n
