SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Zhivago Duncan: The Rare But Known Phenomenon
DESCRIPTION:It’s a pleasure to find an artist who is prepared to expand on their principles\, and to do with Zhivago Duncan’s level of articulation. “Within this new collection\,” writes Duncan\, “I have endeavoured to distill the complexity of ideas and images into a meditative practice that mirrors the cycles of nature\, whether it be the gentle unfolding of a sunrise\, the fiery blaze of a sunset\, or any other natural phenomenon typically devoid of philosophical interpretation … In the current landscape of our world\, characterised by pervasive confusion and a prevailing sense of complacency in personal and material achievements\, I am compelled to recognise the interconnectedness of humanity as a collective entity …” \nDuncan says he aims to challenge the conventional understanding of colour through his paintings: “its existence is not absolute but rather contingent upon perception”. And “like a palate cleanser between sushi courses\, these paintings serve to clear the cluttered recesses of the mind and realign one’s focus on the present moment … With each brushstroke\, I remain anchored in the present\, embracing the transient beauty of this moment in time”.

SUMMARY:Walid Siti: Fragile Construct
DESCRIPTION:Two towers loom large in Walid Siti’s artwork\, one manmade – the 9th century Malwiya minaret of Samarra\, encompassing both the hubris of political power and the genius of an unknown architect; and the mountains of his native Kurdistan\, formed by nature but central to the myth and identity of the region’s residents. \nThe mountains overshadowed Siti’s childhood in Dohuk in the 1950s and 1960s and were often painful reminders of the personal impact of the political situation in Iraq. The physical presence of the minaret at Samarra was more enigmatic; he never visited it while growing up in Iraqi Kurdistan\, instead seeing the monument from the bus to and from art school.\nSiti found power in these two forms through their continual reworking in his practice; he continues to study them through hundreds of sketches\, leading to a painting or a sculpture. Siti’s compositions force the viewer to focus on the building blocks of his towers\, this being his practice\, whether they are acrylic lines of paint or aluminium wires. \nThe cyclical nature of Siti’s practice brings the constant hope of renewal. No matter what landscape or context he finds himself in\, for Siti\, there is always metal\, wood\, clay or dust from which to build a tower or a mountain. \nTo 3 February. \nAbove: Walid Siti\, Suppleness of a Mountain (2023)

SUMMARY:A Utopian Stage: Excavated Archives: Festival of Arts\, Shiraz-Persepolis
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition describes an open-ended\, evolving project that “explores how in the aftermath of the collapse of European hegemonies and the rise of the Global South a fluid artistic exchange was possible across geographies\, histories and forms in ways and on a scale that had never been possible before”. \nThe Festival of Arts was held around Shiraz every summer from 1967 to 1977; the ancient Persian ruins of Persepolis were a spectacular backdrop for what has been described as “one of the most adventurous and idiosyncratic festivals in the world” and “perhaps the most radical commissioning festival in history”\, a melting pot of traditional and avant-garde music\, theatre and performance. The festival\, which came to an end with the Iranian revolution\, featured artists from both East and West. \nThis exhibition includes archive film and photographs\, original theatre programmes and posters\, and the gallery describes the overall project as a “reconstruction of a complex space of international modernity … defined by the ‘third worldist’ sensibilities of the immediate post-colonial period”. The project examines how Shiraz-Persepolis acted as a contested site of competing solidarities and proliferating visions of an interconnected world; and how\, importantly\, it facilitated the encounter between international and local avant-gardes. “It is precisely the festival’s pronounced rejection of a tension-less\, homogenising fusion of cultures\, and its alignment with the principles of particularism\, cultural difference\, and alterity that demand our attention today.” \nTo 4 November.
