SUMMARY:La Ferme des Bertrand (The Bertrand’s Farm): dir Gilles Perret (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Reflective\, slightly elegiac documentary on rural French farming life via three visits over 50 years to a family farm in Haute-Savoie. In 1972\, the Bertrand dairy farm — run by three brothers and home to a hundred animals — is filmed for the first time. Director (and neighbour) Gilles Perret returned in 1997\, when the farm is being passed on to nephew Patrick and his wife Hélène. Twenty‑five years later\, he picks up the camera again as Hélène prepares to hand over the reins. Through the voices and gestures of those who shaped the farm across generations\, the film traces intimate life paths shaped by work\, continuity\, and change … \nIn French with English subtitles. Screens as part of the series Family Reel: Celebrating the Year of the Family.

SUMMARY:Grüße vom Mars | Greetings from Mars: dir Sarah Winkenstette (2024)
DESCRIPTION:Tom is ten and different from other children: changes unsettle him\, loud noises overwhelm him\, and he feels most at home in his world of outer space — often dressed in his astronaut suit. When his mother unexpectedly has to travel to China\, Tom and his siblings Nina and Elmar are sent to stay with their grandparents in the countryside for six weeks. To Tom\, this feels like a disaster; but to encourage him\, his mother gives him a logbook and suggests treating the stay as a trial Mars mission. With Nina as the radio operator and Elmar as First Officer\, the small crew sets out to explore the “planet” Lunau — and to understand grandparents who seem to live by rules entirely their own. \nIn German with English subtitles. SUMMARY:La vita da grandi  | Siblings: dir Greta Scarano (2025)
DESCRIPTION:Irene is happy enough in Rome when her mother asks her to return for a few days to Rimini\, the city where she was brought up and from which she fled\, to take care of her older brother Omar. He’s autistic\, and he has very clear ideas about his future: he has no intention of living with her when their parents are no longer around\, and he is ready to do anything to fulfill his life’s dreams – to get married\, to have three children\, and to become a famous rap singer. But for all these things to happen\, Omar must first become independent; this comedy-drama charts the touching route through which he can become “an adult” … In their home full of memories\, Irene and Omar face fears and hopes together and discover that\, in order to grow\, sometimes you need two people. \nIn Italian with English subtitles. SUMMARY:La Vallée des Fous (Sailing Home): dir Xavier Beauvois (2024)
DESCRIPTION:Jean-Paul is not a bad guy by any means\, but he is going through a rough patch – pp to his ears in debts\, he pulls away from his family and takes refuge in the bottle. But\, inside\, he dreams of adventure; and he projects these fantasies onto the Vendée Globe\, the famous single-handed\, round-the-world yacht race\, an event which he sort-of took part in … by sitting in front of his computer and joining Virtual Regatta (alongside a million other internet users). This time round\, he decides to take the virtual challenge seriously – it does after all have a €150\,000 prize for the winner – and he elects to confine himself to the boat parked in the garden of his restaurant for three whole months. Jean-Paul equips himself with all the gear – wind turbine\, a solar panel\, food rations\, medical supplies – under the dubious but loving eyes of his father and daughter. And then the day of the departure arrives … \nIn French with English subtitles. The film screens as part of the NAAS Film Festival\, a collaboration between several international cultural institutions in the UAE that screens independent films which highlight socially relevant themes.

SUMMARY:Discesa libera | Free Fall: dir Sandro Torella (2025)
DESCRIPTION:Manuel Falco is a young actor who\, after an early success\, finds himself avoided by everyone because of his excessive disrespectfulness. He is forced to start over\, taking on modest jobs — among them caring for Vittorio\, an elderly man with Alzheimer’s. When Vittorio is admitted to a clinic\, Manuel follows him and attempts to “heal the patients through art”. This dream may mark Manuel’s own rebirth — and offer a glimmer of hope to those in his care. \nIn Italian with English subtitles. SUMMARY:Promis le Ciel | Promised Sky: dir Erige Sehiri (2025)
DESCRIPTION:Sehiri’s intimate drama follows four generations of Ivorian immigrant women as they find solidarity\, conflict and sometimes a sense of displacement in one another’s company. We’re dropped into the lives of Marie (Aïssa Maïga)\, Naney (Debora Lobe Naney) and Jolie (Laetitia Ky)\, as the three roommates care for a little girl\, Kenza (Estelle Kenza Dogbo)\, a displaced child who appears to have miraculously survived a migrant shipwreck before the three women found her. Female relationships are complicated enough as is\, even between those on a level playing field; but in their adopted home in Tunisia none of the women are equals from a socio-economic standpoint … \nScreens in the Manarat al Saadiyat’s week-long CineMas “alternative film festival”.

SUMMARY:The Jury Experience – Death by AI: Who Pays the Price?
DESCRIPTION:True immersive theatre: the audience is the jury at the heart of a live trial – hear the testimonies\, consider the evidence\, weigh the arguments … and deliver a verdict. The case also seems very now: a driverless car is involved in a fatal incident\, raising issues about responsibility and accountability that will surely become much more common in future. The result should be an entertaining and engaging way to explore technology\, ethics\, and decision-making. \nThere are shows at 5pm and 9pm. It last about an hour.

SUMMARY:Alle reden übers Wetter | Talking about the weather: dir Annika Pinske (2022)
DESCRIPTION:Writer-director Annika Pinske’s debut feature tells the story of Clara\, a middle-aged college lecturer and doctoral candidate who seems somewhat uncomfortable with her life in Berlin.  That gets put into focus when she pays a weekend visit to her hometown in rural East Germany with her 15-year-old daughter to celebrate her mother 60th birthday; there’s a stark contrast between the pacey\, urban\, moneyed city existence and a folksy\, economically challenged village where life is comparatively simple. The differences in atmosphere and attitudes are palpable. So which of these alternatives is more fulfilling? \nThe film (in German with English subtitles) screens as part of the now-annual NAAS Film Festival\, a collaboration between several international cultural institutions in the UAE that each year it brings independent films to the UAE with socially relevant themes. This year’s is ‘Family Reel: Celebrating the Year of the Family’ – a selection of films that highlight the diversity\, strength\, and significance of familial relationships.

DESCRIPTION:A warm-hearted and thoughtful holiday story of three lonely\, shipwrecked people who find support in the most unlikely of places. SUMMARY:Abu Dhabi Art
DESCRIPTION:The 16th edition of Abu Dhabi Art will take place from 19 to 23 November\, as usual at Manarat al Saadiyat. The fair element has more than 140 galleries from 37 countries\, by far the largest number to date – last year’s edition had 102 galleries. And it also means Abu Dhabi Art has overtaken local rival Art Dubai (the March edition of Art Dubai had around 120\, about the same as in 2024). \nMohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak\, chair of DCT Abu Dhabi\, described the fair as “the region’s most influential platform for art and ideas\, a cultural moment where the UAE’s pioneering spirit engages with the global art community”. He may well be right; and as well as the record number of galleries\, Abu Dhabi Art – which from next year will become Frieze Abu Dhabi as a result of a deal with the Frieze art fairs group – continues to promote what its director Dyala Nusseibeh calls “under-represented art histories … From pioneers of the Peruvian Amazon\, Venezuela and Brazil to modernists from Türkiye\, artists from Nigeria’s Osogbo art movement\, Khaleeji trailblazers\, modern artists from North Africa and leading artists from China\, this year’s fair resonates with the globally impactful\, museum-led vision shaping Saadiyat Island’s cultural identity”. \nThe fair itself is organised into five principal sectors: \nModern & Contemporary: for established galleries (who have been operating for at least seven years) with curatorial framework for booth presentations. This is the main section\, with 55 galleries showing. \nSpecial Projects: up to three artist presentations by individual galleries who have been in business for at least three years – more than 50 of these. \nEmerge: for artworks priced under $3\,000 – seven participants this year. \nBidaya: for emerging galleries (operating for less than three years) who are first-time participants. There are three exhibitors. \nFocus: galleries invited to participate with specific artists chosen by a guest curator. This where you will find the Collectors Salon for collectable non-art works; a section for Modern Türkiye\, with three galleries showcasing rarely seen works by modern masters; a Nigeria Spotlight featuring seven galleries from the country; and the Gulf Region focus\, with a good selection of local galleries \nBut as well as the conventional art fair\, Abu Dhabi Art places a lot of emphasis on its public engagement programme – installations\, commissions\, exhibitions\, talks and events throughout the year. Worth catching: \n Beyond Emerging Artists This programme commissions new work from three emerging artists in the UAE. The 2025 edition is curated by Issam Kourbaj\, who has been mentoring Alla Abdunabi\, Salmah Almansoori and Maktoum Marwan Al Maktoum as the three participants this year. \nCommunity Partners Exhibition Since 2018\, Abu Dhabi Art has invited community partners to participate in the fair through thematic exhibitions that foster cultural dialogue and social impact. For 2025 ADMAF is collaborating with Studio Salasil\, a future-focused curatorial studio\, to transform the Community Partners exhibition into a vibrant platform for artistic and cultural dialogue. \nArt + Tech Launched back in 2017\, the Art + Tech programme at Abu Dhabi Art connects students from universities across the UAE with artists working at the intersection of creative expression and emerging technologies. This year’s programme is led by Ahmed Al Attar\, an Emirati robotics engineer and founder of art and technology studio REALIITY. Drawing inspiration from traditional Sadu patterns\, the project will be reimagining heritage through a kinetic projection installation that explores pseudo-randomness\, cultural symbolism\, and technological transformation. \nAnd this year for the first time Abu Dhabi Art will officially feature digital art via its Digital Art Partner\, reimagined – “a new initiative based in the UAE focused on driving adoption of technology and blockchain in the arts”. Its curated selection showcases seven artists with works built on technical and conceptual innovation\, engaging critically with digital formats and pushing creative boundaries; alongside the exhibition\, reimagined is hosting a program of talks and panels discussions with artists\, curators\, and art professionals. \nAbu Dhabi Art is open daily from 2am to 9pm. Complimentary guided tours in both English and Arabic will be available. \nAbove: Leander Herzog\, INFINITE GARDEN (in the Digital Art exhibition)

SUMMARY:The Teachers' Lounge: dir İlker Çatak (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Carla Nowak (Leonie Benesch) is an idealistic new high-school teacher. She seems to have connected with her Year 8 students\, who are engaged and eager to learn in her maths class. But something is bubbling underneath the surface\, and she’s quickly thrust into a delicate situation when a Turkish boy is suspected of theft. Not convinced of his guilt\, Carla takes matters into her own hands and inadvertently starts down a path that soon begins to spiral out of control. As she tries to mediate between students\, parents and opinionated colleagues\, she is relentlessly confronted with the structures of the school system. Carla is pushed to her limits\, and the school becomes a proxy for the cultural and ethical clashes of modern day society … \nThe Teachers’ Lounge is a study in power dynamics\, with themes of truth\, justice\, racism\, respect\, and children’s rights that demonstrate how individuals are worn down between entrenched positions. Playing out like a thriller\, the film expertly explores the fault lines of contemporary society; the award-winning German writer-director İlker Çatak has produced a brilliantly observed drama that was deservedly nominated for an Oscar and is a favourite on the festival circuit. \n

SUMMARY:The Mummy: dir Stephen Sommers (1999)

Deep in the Egyptian desert\, a band of explorers searching for long-lost treasure have accidentally unearthed and resurrected a 3\,000-year-old Egyptian priest. Adventurer Rick O’ Connell (Brendan Fraser) pairs up with librarian (?) Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) and a motley archaeological crew to conquer the curse of the living dead … \n  \n

SUMMARY:Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein: dir Charles Barton (1948)
DESCRIPTION:Gratifyingly\, this does exactly what it says on the tin (or rather\, in the title): the world of railroad baggage handlers Chick Young (Bud Abbott) and Wilbur Grey (Lou Costello) is turned upside down when they receive a strange shipment – the last remains of Dracula (Bela Lugosi) and Frankenstein (Glenn Strange) en route to the House of Horrors museum. Chaos ensues as Chick and Wilbur get mixed up in an evil plot to switch Wilbur’s brain with Frankenstein’s; things aren’t helped by the presence of Larry Talbot (Lon Chaney\, Jr.)\, who turns into The Wolf Man when the moon is full … Plays in a double with The Mummy at 3.25pm.

SUMMARY:Psycho: dir Alfred Hitchcock (1960)
DESCRIPTION:It doesn’t get much better than the original if you want a psychological thriller dripping with suspense. Janet Leigh stars as Phoenix secretary Marion Crane\, absconding with a small fortune of her employer’s money; she takes a wrong turn in a storm and finds herself at the Bates Motel\, where Anthony Perkins is in suitably scary form as proprietor Norman Bates. We all know what happens next\, but as private detective Martin Balsam and Marion’s sister (Vera Miles) search for Marion\, the horror and the suspense mount to a terrifying climax … Hitchcock’s film\, definitely one of his greatest movies\, has become a cultural phenomenon with its mix of suspense\, horror\, mystery\, black comedy; this is the original cut of the movie\, exactly as intended by the director.

SUMMARY:La Llorona: dir Jayro Bustamante (2019)
DESCRIPTION:Guatemalan auteur Jayro Bustamante’s transfixing fusion of folklore\, magical realism and searing political commentary was inspired by the real-life indictment of the authoritarian Efraín Ríos Montt for crimes against humanity. A notorious\, indignant\, ageing former military dictator\, Enrique stands trial for atrocities committed against Guatemala’s Maya communities; as a horde of angry protestors threatens to invade his opulent home\, the women of the house – his haughty wife\, conflicted daughter\, and precocious granddaughter – weigh their responsibility to shield the erratic\, senile Enrique against the devastating truths being publicly revealed. While battling legal repercussions and the people’s demands for justice\, he and his family are plagued by a series of increasingly strange and disturbing occurrences\, seemingly brought on by an enigmatic new housekeeper. With a restraint that renders the film’s shocks all the more potent\, Bustamante crafts a chilling vision of a nation reckoning with collective harms and the restless ghosts of a past that refuses to die … Recommended. \nIn Spanish\, Mayan-Caqchickel and Mayan-Ixil\, subtitled in English.

SUMMARY:Sorry We Missed You: dir Ken Loach (2019)
DESCRIPTION:Characteristically powerful social drama of the British working class from Ken Loach. This wrenching\, intimate family drama exposes the dark side of the so-called ‘gig economy; an unrelenting work schedule\, a ruthless supervisor and the needs of their two teenage children cripple the dreams of delivery van driver Ricky and his care-assistant wife Abby. As always\, Loach gets superb acting from his relatively unknown ensemble cast\, and the reviews wwre uniformly enthusiastic – “brilliant”\, “utterly absorbing”\, “unmissable”.

SUMMARY:20\,000 Leagues Under The Sea: dir Richard Fleischer (1954)
DESCRIPTION:Another of Cinema Space’s free-to-view classics\, this one a restored version of the Oscar-winning Jules Verne story: Kirk Douglas\, Paul Lukas\, and Peter Lorre are shipwrecked\, taken captive by the mysterious Captain Nemo (James Mason) on his submarine Nautilus. Wavering between genius and madness\, Nemo has launched a deadly crusade across the seven seas – so can the captive crew foil his evil plan before he destroys the world? SUMMARY:Hester Street: dir Joan Micklin Silver (1975)
DESCRIPTION:Carol Kane is extraordinary as a Jewish immigrant arriving in late 19th-century New York with her young son Yossele (Paul Freedman) to join a husband (Steven Keach) who she hasn’t seen in three years. He’s embraced the new world and regards his wife as a throwback to a culture that he desperately wants to forget; she finds it hard to adapt to the new life\, too attached to the traditions of her former community to envelop herself fully in New York’s modernity. It could’ve been gloomy\, the underbelly f the Gilded Age\, but in fact it’s an entertaining and humorous film that earned Kane an Oscar nomination.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Layered Medium: We Are in Open Circuits
DESCRIPTION:Subtitled explicitly ‘Contemporary Art from Korea\, 1960s to Today’\, this exhibition is a selection of works from the Seoul Museum of Art\, curated by SeMA’s Kyung-Hwan Yeo and Maya El Khalil for the Abu Dhabi Festival\, and it aims to cover the “legacy of material and conceptual combination\, exchange\, hybridity\, and innovation” in the radical Korean contemporary art scene. \nThe title echoes Nam June Paik’s vision of ‘open circuits’\, where connection and meaning flow beyond boundaries; so the exhibition immerses the viewer in “the fluid intersections of consciousness\, technology\, and art”\, specifically showing “how artists work with varied technologies to intervene in\, interpret and mediate different scales of experience\, from the individual\, the archival and the collective\, to the abstract and yet to become …” \n

SUMMARY:Layered Dialogues: Society as Medium – In/Visible City
DESCRIPTION:Another in the series of panel discussions based around the Layered Medium: We Are in Open Circuits exhibition at this venue (runs to 30 June and is well worth seeing). Artist Minouk Lim talks with Wael Al Awar\, Principal architect and founding partner of hop studio waiwai\, discuss the hidden infrastructures of the city – both material and social – that orchestrate urban life and social relations. How does infrastructure operate as both geopolitical script and social choreography? How do these systems emerge from\, and reinforce\, particular forms of social organisation? \nConceiving the city as a layered topography of speculative\, real\, and imagined mediums\, ranging from master plans to maintenance routines\, the discussion focuses on Gulf urbanism and the cultural logic embedded in its invisible systems. This should deliver some fascinating insights …

SUMMARY:Layered Dialogues: Society as Medium
DESCRIPTION:Subtitled ‘Objects as Anchors: Material\, Narrative\, and Memory’\, this panel discussion riffs on the recently-opened Layered Medium: We Are in Open Circuits exhibition at this venue (runs to 30 June and is well worth seeing). \nAs the blurb puts it: “Objects persist across time and space\, becoming focal points around which communities\, identities\, and histories take shape. From traditional crafts and ritual items to incidental domestic bric-a-brac\, objects can anchor deeply personal or collective narratives … [The] subjective interdependence of material\, memory\, and narrative means that\, while objects might travel\, their precise meanings do not always move with them: what is sincerely felt in one place or time does not necessarily translate …”\n‍\nArtists Rand Abdul Jabbar and Sojung Jun are in conversation with Tina Sherwell\, Associate Arts Professor at NYUAD and co-director of the MFA programme there. \n

SUMMARY:Gloria! dir Margherita Vicario (2024)
DESCRIPTION:Set in a Venetian boarding school for orphaned girls at the end of the 18th century\, Gloria! tells the story of a group of talented young musicians who are dteermined to make music. There’s a mischievous musical anachronism at the film’s heart\, and the young female cast that delivers it has real chemistry It’s the directorial debut of actor-musician Margherita Vicario\, who knows what she’s talking about … \nThe film screens as part of the NAAS: She Reel programme\, subtitled ‘Women in Society: Stories That Inspire\, Change That Empowers’ and dedicated to showcasing women’s stories and raising awareness about their roles in our lives.
